So you've got all your parts picked out

Scenario: You have your set budget for a new build (nothing specific, it's a hypothetical question anyway) and you're ready to order your parts. Suddenly something happens and you're forced cut down on your build (one of your deals expires or a part goes out of stock etc). What is/are the part(s) you skimp out on to save the few $$ to get your build back in your price range?

 

Me, I would go with motherboard since not too many of them are that much different anyway

Skimping on anything here except for storage (maaaaaaaaaaaaybe case if you don't want anything fancy) will suck. You can always add storage later.

 

I'm making the assumption you mean how much media storage you have, and not the difference between an SSD and HDD because that is inexcusable.

This, I skimped on both my case and psu, hate both and now have to replace both. Does mean that I can keep my old rig in the case and powered however this was a costly mistake.

I skimped on my PSU (understandably the worst offense), my motherboard, my CPU cooler, my case and my graphics card. I plan on getting better parts in the coming months, specifically a 550W SeaSonic PSU, Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H, Cooler Master CM Storm Scout II in White and a bunch of Noctua fans. Also, I will either get a 7970 with a nice cooler or wait for 9000 series. Also, I have since purchased a Cooler Master Seidon 240M.

I don't believe in skimping. I balance each part until the build still fits in the budget and nothing skimped on. It's okay to compromise more than one part if the whole build is more balanced in the end.

So basically you are telling me almost no one should buy a pc? Im not 100% happy with my rig. Why? Im not rocking sli titans with 3x 4k monitors and some fancy watercooling setup.

I bought it anyway because i can never afford (i actually dont want to. At some point its a waist of money) it but i also can do almost all the things i want.

You should have a reasonable idea of what you want, some people do not want a watercooling rig, others will not be able to afford it, you work up to the budget which would please you and then you work from there, if you have to skimp, wait until you have some more money available.

I wanted a GTX 660 but couldn't afford it, so I went with a 7770 since it's what I could afford, and I figured skimping on my CPU was a mistake since a 3570K will suffice for quite a few years. My Q9550 lasted a good 4 years.

I would probably skimp out on storage because you can hold of on installing your massive steam library until you have enough money for a larger storage drive..

that being said, you don't have to go for the best of the best, just the best you can for what you want/need to do and relative to other options out there.

I'm skimping in case or storage, I mean if you are on a budget build you wouldn't be looking at getting a 900D or anything that fancy and for a low price there are some decent cases out there, maybe not the most fancy or maybe not the a crap ton of LEDs on it but there are some pretty simple cases that end up looking elegant compared to a case with more lights than a christmas tree

storrage as i have a few 1tb hdds from my previous build and maby the case if im not after any fancy and just dos what i need it to

I would wait but if I would tell someone what to do I would tell them to skimp on Storage and upgrade that later.
