Overview: Me and friend of mine have been playing Minecraft on Xbox One because we both have one. Unfortunately we have both played PC Minecraft before and miss the mods and just all-around 'betterness' of it. So just as a thought process I thought I'd ask the lovely LTT community how much it would cost and what we would need. As it stands now just me and my friend play so that is a whopping TWO people. So what do we, or I, because he has no idea how to build a computer, need to get?

And I guess for fun I'll address the 'Build Plan Thread Recommendations' outline even though there is no plan...

Budget and Location: Were broke college students, please be frugal. Arigatōgozaimashita...

Aim: Host a Mincraft server for 2 people. I would like to keep the power-draw low because despite the fact there is only two of us, we would like it to run 24/7 for convenience. So if that means spending more on reliable hardware thats fine just keep it reasonable.

Monitors: I was just going to use an old Dell monitor for setup and monitoring and what not. It's a VGA monitor and its in 4:3!

Peripherals: Mouse and keyboard not needed. Most likely will need an OS, however its not necessary to include.

Why are you upgrading: I don't think this counts as an upgrade...there never was a server to begin with.

Sidenote: Minecraft claims to be capable of having its server run on Windows, OS X, and Linux. To my knowledge OS X is free but there could be some hardware restrictions there. Linux is also free. So the question is, does the server OS influence the gameplay. This is in regards to mods and such. More specifically Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders mod and Buildcraft, Galacicraft, Tekkit and the likes.

Uh yeah. It's basically a program that you run one of your PCs, then you make sure you've forwarded the ports and voila. The whole process takes about two minutes if you're used to it, 10-15 if you're not.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

I would have gotten a tablet and a desktop pc instead.

In hindsight I would have gone desktop and Chromebook. But hindsight is 20/20. I'm not a fan of tablets

Oh. Nifty. I didn't know you could port-forward LAN. I'll give that a try.

i think i can safely say i'm one of the most knowledgable people on the forum in terms of minecraft server.

i've done an unhealthy amount of load testing and experimentation.

first off, you can just keep the server on one of your computers (yours or your friend's) and turn it on when you decide to play.

if you want a "dedicated server" they're cheaper than you'd think.

fish up an old computer that someone is throwing away. the moment you have some cpu horses in there (a P4 will do mostly) and at least 2GB ram (1GB is manageable, but cutting it close) you're set.

i've hosted for a fair little while on an athlon 64 with a gigabyte of ram. (later upgraded to 2GB)

when that caught fire i switched over to a P4 with the same 2 gigabytes of ram.

as for OS: it doesnt matter. all that matters about the OS is that it needs to keep enough ram free for your server.

the moment you have the box going (or are hosting on your macbook, which wont be as horrible as some make it out to be, macbooks are still fairly capable)

its just a matter of either opening a port (25565) or setting up something like hamachi (i cant really recommend hamachi because they have the slowest dev team ever, it took them several years before they had a windows 8 compatible build)

You could have said "stopped working" instead of "caught fire" because now I'm curious. But it seems port forwarding is the way to go. And like normal people I game on Windows and I have Windows 10 so I'm gonna assume Hamachi is out of the question so. Thanks!

Yeah, its about the closest i can get to liking a laptop/tablet since i hate both.

My friend went from "Hey the Asus Transformer seems pretty cool" to "The Asus Transformer was terrible I didn't like it" to "You know I think I'm gonna buy one"

He tried it out at Best Buy or something and hated it so much he wants to buy one now. I don't understand how that works.

well... the catch is that it still works, it just smells like a barbecue when i turn it on...

it was a freebie that was 10 years old and in extremely bad shape when i got it. (caps on the mobo were inflated and everything)

Why is hamachi out of the question? I've used it on windows before <.<

its not that it doesnt work, its that it tends to be rather unreliable on newer versions of windows.

even now still its not quite there yet on windows 8, causing some derps every once in a while.

Go through himachi and run a pc in your pc, just make sure you have 8+ for ram since you need at least 6gb imo for a good modded server and for 2 people that will be perfect.

I am currently on a virtual server with 6gbs of ram and it runs well with 12 people on it at a time with FTB infinity

Actually how terrible would a computer from like 2002 be? We still happen to have our old Dell 8250. I think that's the model. Its very old and sad and uses IDE drives

Oh then it should be easy for you then, go onto himachi and download it and learn how to set up a regular server and once you have that down you can learn how to set up the modded server on your pc, its not that hard.  You can set the server on your pc to have 6-8gbs of ram and that should be enough to run a modded server but just make sure that you dont use all the rest of the ram on your pc at the same time but it should all be simple
