Does JPEG compression ever bother you?

This is a very valid question I've gotta ask.

Does JPEG compression ever bother you? Because it really bothers me.

Here's a really great example of the same scene of images zoomed in. Click on the images for the source image.

k8RVb.pngThis is the image at JPEG quality 90. It looks godawful zoomed in.

k8RW6.pngThis is JPEG quality 100. It looks much better but there are some imperfections especially involving the actual light source.

k8SbM.pngHere's a lossless PNG of the image. Notice the small details that aren't degraded from JPEG.

This is why all professional renders are png kiddies. I and many other artists are not wiling to degrade the color and sharpness of our work.

as someone that does photography you learn to love it overtime, since I am limited by file size anyway, 8-10mb JPEGs aren't that rare for me, but sites want 4mb max, so yeah.... kinda love/hate relationship.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

yeah, it bother me like.. a crapton.

I hate when sites will only accept jpegs. I would rather use highly compressed png's

zoomed in more than 100% ....

Even if an image isn't zoomed, I can tell if it's a bad JPEG.

It saves bandwidth... I don't mind jpeg's as long as it doesn't look shit without zooming in.

I hope we will come at a point where sites allow super big files, so no compression is allowed.. but than again, the file size will grow together with the resolution of files and screens together with bandwidth available..

.png = master race.

It's like all around best IMO.

If I want no compression at all I will go .bmp and otherwise slightly compressed png

Lol, unfortunately i have to use jpeg as well for stuff like steam icons, because they only allow images of like 256kbs or some crap like that. Even if i go for a low quality png it's magnitudes over the "maximum image size"

so that ignorant idiots can upload their unnecessary big .tiffs, because they think that is the only way they should share their crappy content?

Windows 10 has been saving all my PNG wallpapers as JPG images with very evident compression artifacts on the desktop. Never had this problem with Win8

It's completely blown out of proportion. the problem isn't jpeg ... the problem is the creator rendering crappy stuff at 720p and then zooming in ...

Resolution isn't really a problem.

Also, these are shots I took from Garry's Mod. If I really wanted to see how it'd hold up at higher resolutions, I've got a 5120x3840 Blender rendered image I can use.
