R9 390 or GTX 970?

Is the 4.5 GB Vram loss too much? Why is it the same price if it appears that the R9 will perform better?

R9 390 is a slightly better card, especially on higher resolutions, however it requires at least a 600-650W quality power supply

there the same essentially. if your playing 1080p go for 970 because it just saves power and nvidia is pretty good with game support and in drivers

R9 390 - a lot of games use more than 3.5GB of VRAM - even at 1080p some do.

Btw - Nvidia's Maxwell cards don't support DX12 fully - it's basically been torn apart by now. Maxwell has 31 compute + 1 Grapchis lane that cannot run simultaneously since the analog scheduler ain't up to the task. AMD's GCN 1.1 and above has 64 compute lanes + 1 Graphics lane that can run at the same time - giving AMD's current cards around a 40% performance increase.

the 390 doesn't output that much more heat or require that much more power than the 970. i mean it does require more wattage, but it's worth it!

Some may report using it, but almost none actually need it. The GTX 970 will not have any problems related to VRAM limitations, especially not at 1080p.

Power hungry - they use almost exactly 240W both - the 970 uses 220W - that means  you'd need to run it @ 100% 24/7 for a year in order to make up the cash difference. Not a valid argument

The last 0.5 GB has been locked away so games cannot access it anymore.

I got the 970 over the 390 because i can squeeze more power just overclocking it,the amd cards can have a harder time ocing,but if you get the 390 to 1150-1200 mhz it will be superior than any 970.About the psu,be sure that your unit is acceptable,at least 550-600w with plus bronze certification or better.

Once i sold an r9 280 to a guy that said that his psu was good enough and it exploded
