First Time Builder, i5/R9 390

Alright boys and girls, I'm a n00b so I call upon you for help. Here is my current part list.

CPU: Intel Core i5-4460 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($176.95 @ SuperBiiz)

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B85M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($59.78 @ OutletPC)

Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon R9 390 8GB SOC Video Card  ($293.98 @ Newegg)

Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case  ($59.99 @ Amazon)

Total: $843.55

Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Generated by PCPartPicker 2015-09-08 19:33 EDT-0400

(US DOLLARS)

Firstly: What is wrong with my build? I know I didn't make it perfect because I just kinda threw things together without too much thought. I'll be gaming and doing some casual web browsing. I have peripherals covered already. I'd probably be looking an Ultrawide in the future or 2-3 monitors.

Second: I don't care about AMD vs. NVIDIA, so if the 390 is a shit tier card lemme know. Just from my limited understanding, AMD generally has better performance per dollar, but they also are nice and toasty.

Third: I'm going for a black and white build.

Lastly: If reccomending new parts, try to keep color scheme consistent, don't let the build get too pricey, and tell me why you chose it so I become smarter.

P.S. This is my first post here so be nice or I'll leave. And we all know that would be devastating to say the least. Amen. Love you. Bye. Thanks.

The only thing I'd change is to remove the cpu cooler since you can't overclock and change the PSU to an EVGA GS or G2.

And the CX series won't make it explode. They've just got a low max temperature. Wouldn't recommend it but that's over exagerating.

This except if you want a somewhat silent kindda PC I suggest a BeQuiet! Pure Rock. It's not needed right away but if you feel the stock cooler is to loud go ahead and replace it. Oh if you do don't forget to clean the thermal paste off of the CPU. The Pure Rock comes with some thermal paste.

The CX500 is not enough for the R9 390 anyway, a 600W+ PSU is recommended, and it's definitely not the one of a CX quality ^^

@TimLaden this is an improved version of your build with a way better CPU and a better PSU (not the best but definitely enough and way better than the CX500)

R9 390 is slightly better than the GTX 970. Especially in resolutions higher than 1080p, it costs about the same or less, has twice as much VRAM and is a more powerful card overall.

@Morgan MLGman I wouldn't get the PSU you picked out Eather. Get a cheap 600w+ XFX or SeaSonic. EVGA they only, got good ones that are $70 or more. That starts its th B2. In today's world I'd get a minimum 600w even if you are only using 250ws. Never know what could come out that you'd want.

Crossfire in the future ?

390 will last a quite awhile. By the time it needs to go to medium/low on games to reach 60 FPS, there will be much bigger boys on the market. My GTX 770 is nearly there and I'd rather pick up a 980/Ti rather than SLI.

But ultimately up to OP.

You just said that a 970 if better when OP said he wants to go multi moniter or ultrawide in the future.

Then you recommend the shitiest SSD that's currently on store shelves.

That's was the fastest I've ever seen someone lose all credibility in a topic.

It's the curent cheapest reliable PSU that can power the build, and hell as stated crossfire is a thing if you want it.

390 goes NOM NOM on power when overclocked (also at stock), and that power supply isn't that good with a 390. You can also grab a GTX 970 if you find them cheaper and get almost the same performance (notice the almost) without a beefier PSU, anyways the 390 it's better suited for you :)

Go Seasonic, or Cooler Master VSM series if they're cheaper. Better safe than sorry.

Heard something about new Gigabyte mobos having shitty VRM's and components, beware.

You don't need that cooler for that CPU, don't get anything above the 212 EVO if you really want a cooler.

Yeah well it's not the best one, it's definitely a good bang for the buck though, you get a 750W Bronze Semi-Modular PSU from EVGA for 50$, that's a pretty good deal.

Should definitely be enough though, the CX500 wouldn't even be able to support the 390 under load... Not even mentioning how bad opinion it has...

Anyway if he can stretch his budget a little, I would recommend at least this one: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0650v1 or better ;)

The PSUs are not that big of a deal as some people make them, I've got a 7 years old Chieftec 600W PSU that's in my 3rd build since 2008 and I've never had any issues with it, it doesn't even have any "80+" efficiency stuff, it's too old for that, I'm using a FX-8350 @4,5 and a GTX970 currently and every part of my PC is basically overclocked, can't complain about the PSU. Assuming that the newer EVGA is way better, should serve for a few good years =)

my corsair psu 750 watt crapped out on me after 3 months swapped to a evga and never an issue after that. only other thing i would recommend is maybe forget the ssd and hdd combo... with prices falling you can get a decent sized ssd that will be plenty and the larger capacity SSDs ive heard have better life spans.

corsair 600t, msi z87-g45, intel 4770k, 16g patriot viper low-pro ram, asus direct cu2 780, crucial 256gig ssd, seagate baracuda 1tb,

EVGA doesn't even make there power supplies. You picked a "tier 4" power supply. At minimum get a cheap power supply from SeaSonic or XFX
