I currently have a MSI R9 280 GAMING 3GB GDDR5 DVI HDMI Dual Mini DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card and i was wondering what the max GPU i could upgrade to would be.

Processor- AMD FX-6300 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 14MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor

Motherboard-MSI 970A-G43 Socket AM3+ 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard

I would like a 980 but wouldn't know if to would bottleneck

It would bottleneck, it would probably bottleneck a 280x slightly, 290 tops.

If you oc the crap out of it you might be holding back a bit but not as bad as stock.... if your system uf good for what you need I suggest keep it and wait a year until amd and intel release theor next Gen of cpu's beyond Skylake and same with the gpu's the 280 is still a good card for 1080

I KNEW IT YOU LITTLE SCOUNDREL. I KNEW YOU DIDN'T HAVE 2 X 290s AND AN I7!

The max GPU i would recommend would be that current GPU.

First upgrade should be to the i5 then you have much more room to spread your legs.

Sell mobo + cpu and buy a locked i5 + h81 then buy whatever GPU you want.

What would i need to upgrade for a 980 mobo+processor?

i5 plus h97/z97 or go with skylake

Skylake is far too expensive for the trade off.

What would i need to upgrade for a 980 mobo+processor?

i5 4440 or 4460 is the best option and a h97 mobo.

Aye ryt mayte ;)

I would highly recommend trying to upgrade to an i5 as no single GPU on the market atm is bottlenecked by an i5.

i really need to make a paste of this somewhere, because i need to put this in every thread that contains the world bottlenecking...

---

there is no clear cut on "bottlenecking or not"

"bottlenecking" is a fine balance between the software you're using, and the different parts of your pc said software is using.

some games may be more CPU heavy than others, and others may load your GPU more. theres also hidden "bottlenecks" like games that dont handle some stuff well, and get bottlenecked on PCI-e bandwidth (it happens, and its very sad...)

when you're extracting a 20GB zip archive the software used probably cant load the entire archive into RAM, meaning it'll need to dynamically load and unload the required pieces, effectively "bottlenecking" on your RAM.

that said, bottlenecking is something that ALWAYS happens, because theres always one element in your system thats the limiting factor for your game's performance.

"bottleneck" simply refers to the part of your system that stops the rest of the system from performing better, because its loaded 100% for the application you're currently doing.

EDIT: should add, back in the day i had an issue with my radeon HD5770 where the fan would pop off its bearings if it needed to do a lot of work, and vsync refused to work, i solved the issue by creating a synthetic "bottleneck" elsewhere in the system, stopping the gpu from burning itself up.

SNIP

Nobody asks for the smart ass answer, all people want to know is if their GPU will be held back more than another options.

so i shouldnt tell the truth, but tell what will get me votes? is this politics?

what i'm getting to with that post is we need to know what he's doing exactly with said system to even have a grasp on if he'd be necking or not.

for all we know he could be playing minecraft, or watch valley benchmark for entertainment.

Why not just give him the basic answer he needs?

Cover all basis in one foul swoop instead of wasting time with paying attention to every tiny detail?

because there is no basic answer.

some games bottleneck on a 4770 with a GT640, others will gladly use a 980ti to the fullest when paired with an FX6300.

if you're that certain of your answer, please provide extensive benchmarks proving every game in existance will not bottleneck a 280, but will bottleneck one step higher.

One pair of CPU + GPU will bottleneck in MOST GAME that MOST PEOPLE PLAY thus that could be factored in to your answer.

That's not really true. It depends on resolution, game, what you're doing in the game, game settings, etc. But to say that an i5 can't bottleneck a GPU is not true. Try Crysis 3 at very high 1080p, especially levels with grass. Witcher 3 in Novigrad. BF4 on 64-player servers. GTA V, in the city. i5's will choke in such CPU intensive situations and all 4 cores will hit max usage.

ik if you look at my earlier post I told him if his pc was good enough for now to just wait for another Gen of cpu beyond Skylake and same with the gpu, skylake isn't that much of an improvement to have to go buy new mobo cpu and ram for a but better performance
