Who do you guys think would win in a 1v1, assuming equal pilot skill? My money goes to the Vanguard, hands down.

It was literally designed to kill things like this, and I plan on ungimballing my S5 for a S6 Railcannon of sort. It'll punch through a Retaliator like paper.

Ceteris Paribus it would come down to sheer luck.
Both of the ships are meant for the Military, and both hold a substantial arsenal to destroy the other with. The Tali however is twice the size and holds twice the crew than the Vanguard, this may give an advantage... especially when it comes to area of coverage (since it does hold very many turrets), so finding a Vanguard may find it hard to grab a good angle of attack. Also the Tali has Anti Cap ship torpedoes it can turn on the Vanguard, which in theory would mess its day up good.

On the other hand the Vanguard is smaller and slightly more maneuverable (slightly), so overall harder to hit (its still a huge target). Having a S6 Fixed gun may rip the Tali's shields to shreds though, depending on how fast and quick an attack can be executed before having been found out.
Though i love my Vanguard... the Tali seems to edge ahead a bit.

The new vanguard variants are up. With module switches like the Tali. I now have a harbinger and a sentinel for the price of my melted caterpillar and avenger

So If I own a base Vanguard (Warden?) and get two battlefield upgrade kits (harbinger and sentinel) I'll be able to use all three variants in the game, right?

Also there is either a permanent ship upgrade or a battlefield upgrade kit that allows me to swap variants any time. Do I get it right?

Direcly off CIGs Vanguard Q&A:

If I buy just one battlefield upgrade kit and equip it, would un-equipping it turn it back again?

Think of it more like plugging three different devices into a USB slot. If you remove one, and it is then added to your overall Hangar inventory and you can plug in another. It also seems important here to note that the upgrade kits are permanent items which will appear in your Hangar and not ‘single use’ tokens. (Another analogy: think of them as like having a set of snow tires for your car. You remove your existing tires and put on the snow tires and can then switch back and forth as the situation warrants.)

Also, this'll keep me from buying one:

Are there no small, pull-out seats anywhere in the escape module? Basically, will the 2nd crewman always have to sit in the turret when maneuvering?

There are no seats; the escape pod navigation is a standing station. No worries, though: the thrusters are quite weak!

Honestly, if by surprise, the vanguard can probably kill the retaliator with focused fire and its big gun. However, in a protracted battle, the retaliator has more immediate fire power and the vanguard still has smaller class shields; albiet multiple sections (not layered, just some redundancy).

So it depends on the skill of the crew.

Still new, but learning
