Is this a good budget gaming build?

The build is great the only thing I would change should be the ram it is a lot safer to go with two sticks of 4gb instead of 1 8gb stick. Ps check out cultofmush he is on YouTube and he makes great videos on how to build computers with a budget.

Looking to play modern games at 1080p with reasonable settings. Will this get the job done and keep all games playable (above 30 FPS)?

I'm assuming your budget is $500. I made it better in a lot of aspects, even added an SSD. The 950 is faster than the 270X and uses less power, plus it's newer.

Looks good, except for $10 more than that R9 270X you can get an R9 380, which is better.

Except... Nvidia currently sucks. The R9 270X beats the GTX 950, and have you forgotten about the fact that Nvidia has HORRENDOUS DX12 support, meaning the R9 290X is within 5fps of the 980Ti. Oh and Nvidia is apparently desperate enough to lie about it too.

This is going off 1 GAME. Nvidia hasn't even optimized the drivers for these games yet...

The 270x beats the 950 but cost $40 more. The 950 can also overclock very well. It's a great budget card but people yet to understand that. For me personally the list of cards for which people should buy is

R7 370 > GTX 950 > R9 380 > r9 390 > r9 390x > 980Ti

In the list you forgot the non X fury, but otherwise ok list, except that you inverted the arrows. The R7 370 apparently wins to the 980Ti :P. Nvidia released a driver specifically for that game, and has had access to the source code of that game for at least a year. Yet AMD, who released no game-specific drivers, are DESTROYING Nvidia.

So you're basing facts off of one game and one driver revision. Great job.

One driver revision to AMD's none. Yeah, I am.
