Quick dumb quetion

So today is quite cool and instead of using the AC I just left the window open, not sure if because of the fresher air all day, or cause of my broken sense of smell but I noticed a metalic/plastic scent in the warm air coming from my exhaust - I panicked a bit - it's coming from the GPU area so I turned on valley for 20 mins and since nothing exploded in a fiery combustion - is that average for warmer air to have a plasticky/metalic smell in it? the air also goes thourgh my front filters which are plastic IIRC and the HDD cage so not sure.

is this a new build? new componants tend to smell for a while.

What are the temps like?  This isn't uncommon with new components or even components that haven't been put through their paces.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!

Probably shouldnt be an issue. After spray painting my case I needed to run the PC elsewhere for a while, god that stinks

It's several months old now but a similar smell I remember from when I first turned it on. I guess it also might be the sound-dampening material that smells but not sure - PC has been on for 6 hours now without issues and I don't see any smoke coming from the PC.

36*C on the GPU and 22*C on the CPU - not warm at all.

Maybe the warm air smelling metalic because of the metal aluminum heatsink?

There could be some part having contact with something completely non-harmful but makes smell. Like an over spray near capacitors.

Not sure - it's not a burning tho

It might be dust. I have had dusty computers make the air taste and smell awful. And matte black paint does NOT discourage dust. Just going to point that out.

There's actually a fine coating of dust on the GPU PCB - reverse airflow will do that ;..;

Gotta clean it - actually yes, it's warm dust now that I put my finger on it.

If a component fails, you will be able to recognise the smell. It smells chemically. I know this all too well.

if something were to fail, there would be symptoms - crashing/rebooting and etc. nothing of that sort noted.

i have had failures without warning. I had a z77 motherboard fail from a faulty DVI cable, I have had an HD 6950 fail from an idiot who put a drink with condensation on the top of my PC. I actually managed to repair both of these items. But not to set "LTT's most paranoid resident" on edge, I am nearly positive that you will be fine. If something does fail, it should be under warranty anyway.

Well, I don't have drinks anywhere near it so that's a + I guess

I do know that the back fan's cable is touching the GPU PCB slightly

unless the gpu gets hot enough to melt through the insulation on the wire (in which you would have more concerning matters to deal with) you will be fine.

max I've seen is 70*C with 37% fan speed - I guess I'm fine then and should dust the PC more often

now that I think about it, the GPU heatsink does have a dusty tone to it (what I see through the fans)
