Greetings all.

So its not unusual for me to be having a hard time finding a game to play nowadays, due to the slower and fewer releases of AAA games not to mention lack of quality due to bad ports. And the indie scene can be very hit and miss.

I miss the days of my youth where I could play through 5 games in the space of a month with ease, all of which I really liked (back in the late 90's early 00's). In the last 5 or so years however I'd be hard pressed to list half a dozen games I've thoroughly enjoyed that released in that time period.

So a bit about my gaming experience. I started in the early 90's on already dated hardware, like the Atari 2600jr and original Gameboy. My most active gaming period however was during the mid to late 90's using a PC and PS1, moving into the 00's with the PC and PS2. Mid 00's however is where things started going downhill, and I put that down to the lowering in the number and quality of games that started around the PS3/Xbox 360 period.

Games I've played and enjoyed in no particular order in the last 5 or so years.

Lords of the Fallen

Darksiders 2

DMC

Devil may Cry 4

Dark Souls 1 - 2 (didn't stick with them though (not finished a single play through)

Monster Hunter Series

Ori and the Blind Forest

Alice Madness Returns

Saints Row 4

Diablo 3

FireFall

MechWarrior Online

Tera Online

SMITE

Ok so there is probably a few I've missed, but right now I cant think of any more. Considering im thinking back 5 years, that's not a long list, and some of those games are not exactly new, DMC 4 for example is 7 years old.

Some of those games have aspects I don't particularly like, yet have others that I really really like..usually means I don't fully complete them but still I enjoyed them for the time I played them..im looking at Dark Souls in particular here. I loved the difficulty, hated the sluggish combat. That said, Monster Hunter could be considered to have sluggish combat but I love it, I just wish there was a newer version on the PC instead of having to use my old PSP 1000 or using an emulator.

If I had to choose 2 games I wish I could play similar games to . it would be DarkSiders 2, and Alice Madness Returns.

I like RPG elements like character building, platforming, puzzle solving, and fast twitch combat.

I hate quick time events and similar gameplay where u press a button to watch ur character do something complex, like in the latest Tomb Raider games, Batman and the like. Its flashy, but its not exactly the player doing the work.

And I REALLY dislike short games (though ill still play a good game if its short), and by short I mean the CORE of the gameplay, not NewGame+, not collectables, not achievements.. just the core game.

Lords of the Fallen I recently completed only took around 15 hours, that's short, I hated that it ended so quick, but I liked the game with the exception of a few things like the crappy port quality, crashing, and the somewhat infuriating sluggish responding combat... I still somehow enjoyed it and wished it didn't end.

So , long post, but I hope I give some idea of what im looking for.

Any1 have any recommendations ? They can be new, upcoming, or old games. For PC or emulated console.

Cheers

From The Depths, Arma 3, DayZ, Skyrim, Gmod, Kerbal Space Program, Space Engineers, Absolute Drift

Played space engineers, I go back to it every now and then, but u really cant play that solo for very long.

Skyrim, I have always liked the look of it, and its game length, but I don't like the feel of the combat, that just kills it for me im afraid. Same reason I didn't like ESO after beta testing for them.

KSP, great to watch lets plays, but like space engineers, I cant play it solo for long.

Absolute dirft I looked up recently, not interested tbh.

And the others iv also looked into and again have not peaked my interest.

shadow of mordor. simple to start, devilishly difficult when things go wrong, and very replayable.

Like Assasins creed, the combat always looks quicktime ish to me. I may give it a try though.

You should try Xenoblade Chronicles, just use dolphin emu to run it on PC.

That game is great. Infact if u go to the Xenoblade Dolphin retexture thread on their forums, ull find iv contributed to it :) (I done some work on starting area textures) I've played the game but alas I never got into it enough to complete.

They took the batman engine, and made the best game they could of it. Yes it does have quicktime, but it's minimal. for small encounters it's more about the combat system. For major encounters it's all about planning your approach.

Never been a fan of MGS, though I think the 1st game on the PS1 has made me bias as I hated the static camera.

That said, the genre itself doesn't really get me excited, i'm more a fantasy fan, be it futuristic, magical, ancient time, etc , anything other than realistic modern/close modern. Its why I don't play FPS/TPS games much, last one I played through all the way was Crysis 1-3, and that was mainly due to the appeal of, 'but can it run Crysis?' and the fact it looked so damn good.

One of my favourite game series of all time is total fantasy based; Legacy of Kain (Soul Reaver 1 -2 - Defiance)

If you enjoyed smite i would recommend something like League of Legends or Dota 2 (L.O.L is my favorite and is played more often)

i was gunna add this to my OP but didnt wanna make it any longer.

I've actually stopped playing SMITE now, while i enjoyed it during Beta and shortly after, its got to cookie cutter now. While SMITE is a MOBA, its the only type of MOBA i would play due to the perspective, top down traditional MOBA's like LoL and Dota 2 aswell as HoTS don't interest me tbh.

Awesomenauts - A 2D MOBA with platforming elements.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Similar to Darksiders, DMC etc)

Some of my favourite platformers (excluding anything too short):

Battleblock Theater

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams

Guacamelee!

Psychonauts

Rayman Legends

o.0 Metal Gear Rising ..yea I never did play that when it came out, I think I just dismissed it as another MGS game, but looking at it again ...looks like a ok hack n slash spectacle fighter.

Ill grab that and give it a go. Cheers

The others, apart from Giana Sisters (which iv watched on NovaWars/lag.tv stream) and Rayman , don't look all that great to me, not to keen on MOBA's really (except Smite), and the others I don't like the art style at all.

I may play RayMan if i'm ever in the mood for a light hearted game, enjoyed the PS1 original back in the day, looking for something more serious though atm.

And Giana Sisters ill likely grab at some point when I wanna play a platformer :)

More recommendations welcome :)
