GTX 960 or GTX 970?

Rockin' a 1080p display. Due to my cpu I was curious if spending an extra $140 for the 970 would be worth it. If my cpu would hold a 970 back, would it be a better use of money to just get the 960 instead? Would there be a noticeable difference between the two considering my cpu? How many frames would my FX-6300 hold a 970 back in the worst case? Cheers.

Specs:
FX-6300(stock clocks, cannot overclock due to cheap mobo)
ASUS M58LXPLUS
CX500

Upgrade to Intel before anything else. You can't even run a 970 with that chip without an OC because it will bottleneck.

Your CPU will not hold it back any different to the other one - to clarify, it will hold them both back :)

Your CPU will hold bothof them back

It won't hold back the 960 but that's the most GPU you can get with that CPU.

I mean it will considering even my FX-8350 held back my 770.

I mean it will considering even my FX-8350 held back my 770.

Doesn't matter, the FX 8350 is basically the same in GPU limitations as the 6300. The only difference is two more useless cores. And the 770 is more powerful than the 960.

does a gtx 960 have the power to run gaems 60fps for most games and run 3 screens at 1080p @ 60hz (i have a i5 4690k)

The 8350 is stronger per core than a 6300 due to it having a higher stock clock speed and the 770 performs pretty much the same as a 960 and trust me I have ran the 8350 and 770 set up I know that it will bottleneck.

I ran an FX 6300 at 4.2GHz with a GTX 760. The 760 was close to the limits of the FX 6300 but it still had room for more GPU horsepower. And by a little more horsepower I mean the 960 which is the 760's successor. The 770 is still more powerful than both of them, a little slower than a GTX 970, so of course it will bottleneck.

Whats the big deal that will botteneck? Some people on this forum says like the PC will explode, he can just buy the GTX 970 or R9 380, and then some months down the road buy some i5... damn, is not that hard to change the CPU.

You are completely wrong the 770 does not perform a "little" slower than a 970 its a LOT slower (http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1037?vs=1355) and here is 960 vs 770 (http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-960-vs-GeForce-GTX-770) they are pretty much the same.

Whoops I meant to say GTX 780 is a little less powerful. Anyway, OP should just swap out for an i3 (at least) or an i5 and then buy a GPU.

Of course it will hold it back some. But by how much? I can't see it being so much as to justify the $400 switch to Intel. Thanks for all the feedback guys!

A r9 380 would be fine.. will get botteneck, but in most games not that much.

Or if you think that bottlenecks are so bad, you can also get some R7 370 2GB.

No, GTX 960 is way too weak for new games with 3 monitors, thats like 75% pixels of 4K.

I would recommend R9 390, R9 390x or GTX 980 Ti.

i dont play games across the 3 screens i play on middle screen with videos on the left and internet on the right (unless its a racing game then i would use all 3) i already have gtx 970 but was wondering if i could get 960 and save £100
