At the moment while some games are starting to show the promise of multi core optimisation, they're very rare (2 that I know of personally). Personally I think the best at the moment is probably the 4690k. After that you're forking out more money for diminishing returns.

Would a 6700k do alot better than a 4790k in gaming? Im looking for an i7 and a CPU that can play games like Farcry 4, GTA V, Skyrim, etc. and that will be able to perform other tasks well, not just gaming

not a lot better no

People will argue 4790k and 6700k is pointless just get a 6600k and or 4690k

I will always say

"If you can afford a i7 get it." Some people may take this as offensive but an i5 is a poor mans choice

Its for the people who cant afford an i7.

If you can get the i7 Get it. Never skip out. The Hyperthreading is worth it.

AMD price per performance DEFINITELY the fx 8350

An Intel Core i3 could outrun on many instances, and a Core i3 + H81 setup costs far less than an FX 8 series on 970.

I think for AMD side, their best FX at this point of time would be FX-8320E, still gets outrun but Intel Core i3 though.

would you say that a 4690k is better than a 4790k, i've heard alot about that one. And i also want a CPU that will be good for the future games. not just current games

I wouldn't say better, for example a 4790K would be beneficial if you're playing something like Battlefield 4 on a large map with many players on.

On the other hand if you're just playing stuff like MOBA or CS:GO then a Core i3 would suffice.

You need to know WHAT you are playing before deciding on your processor.

YOu must compare the games you intend to run (either now or within the lifetime of your build) to answer that question. Most games are not multi-threaded tasks and are GPU-dependent. That said, if you are or are not planning on using a discrete graphics card, this will change my answer.

spending 100$ extra for a CPU that has very minimal performance advantages in gaming when you can invest the savings in a better GPU and blow the i7 option's head off?.

The 4690k isn't better than the 4790k, but it is cheaper. Of the games you listed earlier, GTAV is the only one that is multi core optimised. I can see this changing in the future. As to the 5960x......well it's as good in every case, it's better when the games start using the extra cores, but it's also ridiculously expensive.

you can OC it to 4GHZ+

Also new AAA titles are optimized for multicore.

to answer your question

low-budget: 6600k

high-budget: 5820k

leet: 5960x

i use a 5820k at 4.4ghz.

lol, single core? When it can turbo a single core past 5 GHz? Yes it can game, it's just way to expensive for a single core optimised application.

What

theoretically your gaining 4 extra threads on top of your 4 primary which will help in ANY situation, Rendering, Editing, Gaming.

You know why AMD hasn't been making chips? They've been trying to crack Hyperthreadings architecture. No one will buy an AMD chip because its under priced and you could get an intel chip with Hyperthreading and theoretically get 2x the performance. It even shows it in benchmarks.

Look at Cinebench benchmarks for 4690k

Its near a 1.8x increase from the 4690k to the 4790k

Its not a waste of money. The proof is there. You just don't see it. Games are becoming more hardware intensive all around now. its not just throw all your money into your GPU

Have you seen how much GTA V is intensive on CPU and RAM? It near takes up all 4 of my cores. for other games I cant say this but Battlefield 4 is a prime example.
