What z97 supports?

Intel Z97 by default supports 2-way SLI. For 3 and 4 way, then the board will need a PLX chip. Without the PLX chip, then it can support quad SLI, but not 4-way SLI.

Note that only boards with the Intel Z97 chipset, that can split the pcie lanes to x8 by x8 supports SLI.

You should look at X99 for 3 or more GPU setups. The Z97 chipset does not have enough PCIe lanes. Check this out:

Yeah, the Z97 chipset doesn't have enough lanes for anything more than 3 way, as I recall. And even then, scaling past 2 cards is absolutely buttfucking horrific.
