DX12 on Windows 7?

Windows 10 launched with full DX12 support. What about those of us that are on Windows 7?

 

I have a 980 Ti, which is allegedly (in the midst of all the confusion regarding the levels of actual DX12 support) DX12.1 ready. Okay, what about W7?

 

 

I cannot have access to DX12 without the OS support, right?

 

 

Is M$ trying to screw us again, or is DX12 going to be supported on Windows 7?!!

Well... It's an OS from 2009. I personally highly doubt they're gonna push DX12 to it. Hell, Vista didn't even get DX11 when it rolled out as I remember.

DX12 is exclusive for W10 at this point. 

 

Microsoft is hardly screwing anyone, they're offering W10 for free for Windows 7 and 8.1 users. 

 

EDIT: Also, bear in mind that Windows 7 is relatively old now, it's 2 Windows generations old.

Nope windows 10 only I think. 

 

It's a free upgrade though, so I don't see how windows is screwing you again?

Nope. You need WDDM 2.0 to have DX12, which is only supported in Win10. So even though your GFX card is able to support DX12, your OS isn't.

Windows 7 is the most used OS right now. But no matter how you look at it, it's 6 YEARS old.

"Free" for a year, with an outrageous EULA on top of it all. Still, it could be a few months before I'm willing to risk W10.

So? It's still old and Microsoft wants people to move over to the new OS. 

 

DX12 is designed to run with Windows 10, it's more work and money for them to get it working with Windows 7, an old OS. Loads of people still use XP, but no one expects DX12 to come to XP.

No, it's free forever if you upgrade within a year. No you don't have to reformat all of your drives.

You have been explained "what gives" you are on an older dated version of windows  and you need WDDM 2.0 which windows 7 doesnt have.

its not microsofts fault your gfx card manufacturer was less then honest saying it was dx12 compatible when dx12 wasn't even a thing in the publics hands

You have a year to upgrade for free, and you get a lifetime license, what are you mad about with that for? 

 

You can upgrade without formatting your drives. Even your OS drive doesn't need to be formatted.

Right now, not very, but it has only just been released. 

 

And like MS can't do that on W7? Switch to a Linux Distro if you're paranoid about that.

I really don't understand the frustration. Yes Win 7 is widely adopted, but if they keep back porting all their software, everyone will stick and Win 7 will become the new XP, once support finally ends (for Win 7). DX12 is based off a newer driver model. 8-8.1 don't have DX12 support either. If you don't want to upgrade, no one is forcing you to. If you want a new feature, you'll need to run the newest platform. Win 7 is old by OS standards. ( I can't believe it either, I remember the day it was released...)

People are having some issues with installing it right now. Wait for a month would be my advice. 

 

You'll have to research what it's like on your own. 

 

Yes, you will get the Pro version of Windows 10 ($149 if you were to buy it). 

 

Most games and applications should work, but there are some issues with drivers and such, so I'd just wait for a bit so they're fixed.
