Hello, I'm here for a problem that isn't that big.

My monitor is 144hz so naturally I'd like to hit 144 fps in games.

Most games does not hit 144fps but rather like 100.

I have a gtx 980 and a i5 4690k and I'm running my games from an ssd.

The 4690 is clocked a bit (I'm at work and can't remember exact values) and I'm having some problems overclocking my 980 (using precision X).

What should I do for higher fps? OC the CPU a little bit more or figure out how to OC my GPU?

what resolution? 1440p or 1080p?

ever though of SLI :D?

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

Overclock, yes.

BTW what games are you playing?

Well, which one? CPU or GPU?

I started playing Mafia 2 yesterday and I sometimes hit 144 and I'm always over 100.

I play a lot of rocket league too and sometimes GTA V.

1440p.

Haha oh yeah I have. Expensive though.

OC both if you can. Also, GTA V is pretty intensive, even though it's well optimized. I wouldn't expect constant over 120fps if I where you.

Especially with that resolution.

You are not going to hit 144 fps at 1440p on a 980 in AAA titles at high settings

Well, 144fps on high end games with a single 980 on ultra at 1440p is never going to happen, just saying.

I am aware of this but I still like to increase my fps. And I'm just asking how to get higher. Is it my CPU or my GPU that is holding back? Or maybe a little bit of both?

There is nothing holding back anything. I would OC the GPU aswell as lowering the settings on the games.

lower your settings would be the free option

If not then a GPU upgrade or SLI 980s would be the solution, your CPU should be fine
