Hi guys so my Girlfriend's birthday is coming up in a few months time however I'm lacking in the budget department to afford to get her something nice however I do plan on taking her out that day for some lunch specifically sushi because she hasn't eaten it in a while but it's her favorite. I want to get her something of real significance like I did last year however things have changed as I just started University so I don't have a plethora of money, damn you textbooks, so I was wondering what would you guys think of me creating her a simple game more on the visual lines of Not a Hero but with a Mario esque in a manner in which you save a Princess, obviously this will be my Girlfriend. So do you guys think I should go for it?

If you're gonna do this you're gonna have to practice... A lot... And educate yourself on how to properly handle and prepare raw fish.

Taking her out is a safe bet. :) The game idea is awesome if she will get it, very personal and creative and it saves your budget. :)

To be honest I've never eaten sushi, doesn't mean I dislike it however I'm willing to give your idea a shot.

The hardest part is making the rice, you have to use special sushi rice, and rice vinegar, I believe you need a 4:1 ratio of rice to vinegar. Don't quote me on this, but if you don't use the oil, the rice won't be sticky and it will fall apart when you goto roll it.

You can get a sushi kit from the grocery store for 10$ or so, and it will come with the wood rolling mats.

When I make sushi I try to keep it simple, I'll cook some shrimp on a skillet, then cut it into some small 1/4in pieces, and then I will make some spicy crab. It's basically just processed crab meat, sriracha and mayo. Then I slice a lemon real paper thin and remove the rind.

put some rice on the mat, spread it out, then put down some spicy crab, and then I'll place a line of shrimp pieces in the middle. Then roll it up using the mat. Then I'll slice it and I'll place the paper thin lemon slices on the top

It takes maybe 30m (not counting rice cook time) to do, and the rolling just takes practice.

This is what I would do though, I would tell your gf you're going to prepare her a gourmet sushi dinner, the two of you should get together and start making a roll and then see how it goes. Only make one roll, and eat it and see what you think. Then take her out to a nice sushi restaurant.

You'll both have a bigger appreciate for the food on your plate, and if you sit at the sushi bar, you'll have something to talk about with the chefs. I actually got some tips from the chefs when they found out I had tried to make my own sushi.
