Depends if they oc the card's,

If they let the cards throttle ( a lot of sites don't up the power target, so the R9 390x goes down to ~940mhz, whereas any tech enthusiast that buys the card would at least raise the power target )

BTW OC3D don't have very logical / good benches, he uses a bunch of different cards with different clocks

for some reason a R9 290 is beating a 980, and a 970 is also beating a 980.

Which one would you say is an accurate representation? And would the card throttle naturally? Would I have to up the target even if I didn't OC, and just used it out of the box?

Even if you don't oc, the R9 390x is still a compelling option,

It all depends on the card, some cards throttle and some don't ( depends on the cooler and model ).

get the one that scores the highest out of the box if you don't want to oc

That would be the MSI 390X right? As long as that doesn't throttle, so I don't experience lower performance, I'm happy.

And I want your honest opinion now, in two months, I'd be able to get a 980Ti, should I wait?

Or, I could grab an MSI 390X right now, and in 3-4 years when it's not enough for 1080p maxed out at 60FPS, throw in another one and up my power supply from 750W to 1000W? Keep in mind getting another 980Ti will take longer than another 390X. What should I do?

so in two months you could have an extra 200$ ?

If I where you I would get a single card ( R9 390 non x ) and then upgrade in about a year ( either crossfire or new card ) ( you would have saved 120$ on the gpu now, and will have an extra 200$ to invest )

But that's me personally, IMO the best would be to get it now ( because I imagine you have no GPU ? and I'm impatient when it comes to my pc )

Past the R9 390 you arrive at a point of diminishing returns in my opinion.

This is the cheapest R9 390 http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/visiontek-video-card-900809

Cheapest 390x http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/visiontek-video-card-900810

The difference is these would trottle compared to a better cooler / card ( MSI, sapphire or other )

So you're saying the MSI cooler is one of the better ones that won't throttle? If that's so, I think I'll get the MSI 390X. I'll be left over with $120, plus I'll have around $400 in two months because it will be my birthday, and one of the perks of being 15 is you still get cash for it, being Italian and Greek also helps with the money flow. By the time I need to upgrade, I'd probably be able to afford a 980Ti or better at the price it's currently at.

Also, what if I told you I have an R9 280(non-x) right now. Would that influence your words?

I would still upgrade,

And by the time you have the money to get a new gpu, the new pascal gpu's will be out.

Oh no I'm not in Italy, I'm half Greek and half Italian, but I live in Canada. And you know Mediterranean families, I have a massive flow just through birthdays and Christmas.

So you're sure the MSI one wouldn't throttle, be it thermally or through power?

The msi has very good reviews, none stating throttling ( that I see by googling )

and seems to oc well if you ever want to get into that later.

Guess I'll get that one. Sell it in two years and get the best AMD card I can buy. I'm beginning to dislike NVIDIA. Only if they change their ways will I buy them.

EDIT: A Fury barely gets 4-5FPS more than a 390X. I'll only be able to sell it once I get the 390X. I'll sell it to add to my funds, to save up for my next upgrade.

The money will be going to an NVIDIA card if they change, or the top of the line singe GPU AMD card in two years.

Forgot about that. Yeah, I'm staying AMD. 390X, SSD, and a water cooler and then a nice 4K Freesync monitor when those are available, along with a new card to do 4K.

I own a 390x and I have it on a triple 120mm radiator. The little bastard does a really good job. I came from two 7950s in crossfire with the stock coolers to a single 390x. Worth it
