Going from GTX 760 to GTX 970

Kevguy

My current gaming machine has an ASUS GeForce GTX 760.  I just purchased on sale from NewEgg the ASUS GeForce GTX 970 STRIX.

I was talking to my buddies last night and they told me I won't notice any difference unless I overclock my CPU and the GPU.  Anybody know if this is true or not?  I hope not as I just purchased a Dell H2415 display to go with the card.  I am currently not overclocking anything as I don't really know how too.

Intel i7-4790K Processor, 32 GB Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3-1600 RAM, ASUS Z-87 Pro Motherboard, Corsair RM 750 PSU, 250 GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD, 2 x 1TB Seagate Barracuda HDDs, ASUS GeForce GTX 970 STRIX GPU, Corsair Carbide 500R Case, AFT Pro-77U Card Reader, Dell UltraSharp 24 Monitor – U2415, Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, Windows 9 (Windows 10 with StartIsBack++)

What cpu do you have? And you will notice a difference. I went from a 660 to my current 970 and there was a huge difference.

Don't forget to Like the things you like!

It will be an insane difference, a 760 is no where near as powerful as a 970. If you have a old crappy cpu that is another story, but assuming the rest of your system is ok, the 970 will be a BIG increase.

Your friends either are stoopid or not sober.

You should notice a difference of min 20 fps on higher settings (without oc).

You can oc to get more power but, since your cpu is already really strong it won't need it to keep up with the 970.

Currently getting 59-60 FPS playing War Thunder on high settings, but renderings a a little slow at times.

You will see huge difference without any overclocking, especially with that 4790 driving whatever card you throw at it.  Your friends are uniformed. Nice rig!

You'll probably see a fps increase of about 30% and higher without overclocks. That's a very significant increase.

an I7 4790k? no difference? WTF? The 760 is budget gaming card, the 970 is one step above that and FAR more powerful. The only thing that would be a limiting factor is the CPU, and since even a SB i7 would see a performance increase, thats BS.

I dunno what to sell it for yet as it's still in the PC and the 970 won't arrive until early next week.

Are you in the UK?  I'm in Canada and I'm not sure if mailing it to you worth it?

Only at 1440p and above. If he's playing 1080p still then a 970 is great for that!

@1Scotty1 did the same upgrade.

You remember well, my friend :) It is true, I had a 760, then upgraded to a 970 and the upgrade was significant, even more so, when I got a second 970 for SLI :) up until recently I sold them and got a 980Ti for the money :)
