OK, I am looking for a new GPU and are trying to decide between going all out balls out and going for the 980 ti, or rather conservative, and going with the GTX 970. I play on a single 1080p monitor. My question is, would you recommend going to my local electronics store and purchasing the 970, and testing it out in my system, and then maybe returning it and getting the 980ti if it does not perform as well as id like. Thanks, btw, my local electronics store has a 30 day return policy.

Well for 1080p, the 970 will be plenty tbh, you can always invest in a more expensive one, but price/performance will be lower of course.

It will be a big upgrade from a 7850 anyway.

If you only plan to play 1080p a GTX 970 will be fine.

However if you want to/are planning on upgrading to 1440p/4k any time soon then go with the 980Ti.

Or.ma 390x if you don't wanna pay $650 for a GPU. It's in between the 970 and 980 in terms of performance but it's a heck of a lot cheaper. It's closer to the 980

390 is good too and it does well in 1440p, better then 970 on both resolutions and price is same, more or less depending on brand and local store. Get that 980ti money, buy 970 or 390 and test it then. If you aren't satisfied get 980ti. If you're satisfied get that extra money in piggy bank to save for next gen card :) Btw, you have 650 w PSU. Stick with Nvidia if you want to keep it. 390 and 390x consume a lot of juice.

If you don't have a problem with spending the money on the 980ti then you should go with the 980ti. Reduces the chance that you are looking to upgrade a few years from now if you're still running 1080p by then, and makes a 1440p monitor upgrade a real possibility.

Get The most powerful card you can afford and dont regret anything.

+1 for 980ti

Else i would recommend a Gigabyte gtx970 g1 over The r9 390 because it performs about the same on 1080 AND 1440p (within 5fps differences for the one or the other) with 50% less power consumption, less heat and noise.

I wouldnt regret a 780ti either. Its still a nice card. Not many cards stay on high end status after 2years. Or would you replace a 780ti with a gtx970? I wouldnt.

The way it gets beaten and how hot that card is, yeap totally. But I'd put it on display for its "Titan" killer status ;)

AMD cards are also better than Nividia (Maxwell lacks compute power in comparison to Kepler) for compute and video rendering, especially with all that VRAM. If you want a little more versatility in your build I'd go AMD as well. But strictly gaming, go for that 970 man.

You don't buy a top tier card expecting that the next gen won't top it. You buy it so you can go longer without upgrading

yeah this is the reason I couldn't justify getting a 980 ti with pascal possibly having a huge jump I wouldn't buy a 980 ti for 1080p cause in two or three years a $350 card will probably outperform it
