Well, if he wants to acually get anything done in heavy video editing, he will NEED to upgrade his budget

Oh! Just to note I wont be doing heavy video editing (for example multple tracks of videos and effects) just pretty simpler stuff that shouldn't be too hard on the hardware.

Okay guys, as you can see on the first page, I've added an alternative PC that may be better suited for my needs. It includes the GTX 650 GPU and I've gone with an H87 mobo along with the 4670 i5 CPU. One addition you'll definitely notice is the inclusion of a Sandisk 120GB SSD. Now I realise it isn't the best SSD but it 's certainly not the worst. It was mentioned in this topic that the speed isn't in the CPU and GPU, I guess that's not completely true, however that got me thinking that having a Mini ITX system would be rather nice plus with this configuration I can get an SSD included which I know will help make the PC feel amazingly snappy as I own a Macbook Air (2012 model) and the SSD performance is amazing. Makes me feel as though I have a beast of a laptop. So I know with a configuration like that it would still be quite good.

What do you guys think?

If you can get the i7, I would get that because Sony Vegas will utilize the extra threads and rendering times will also be decreased.

Say this next time instead of saying 'considerable amount of editing in Sony Vegas Pro 12'.

Also, you'll have trouble gaming with a 650 as it is considerably weak.

This may sound like a dumb question. How does the Corsair Hydro Series H80i CPU Cooler work?

I could be wrong, but basically it uses the coolant inside to cool the CPU also using a copper plate.

The heat is then taken through the coolant to the radiator which it then spreads the heat to all the fins. Which then the fan works to push that heat out of the fins and out of your case. The process works like that again and again. Could be wrong though. But that's my view on it :P

Not sure if any of you were aware but from what I have read NVIDIA left the compute component out of the GTX 6** series of graphics cards as they wanted to focus more on enhancing their GPUs for games. As a result there is a considerable hit in compute performance which meant that AMD GPUs out perform NVIDIA 600 series of GPUs when it comes rendering in Sony Vegas Pro 12. But it appears from an AandTech GPU benchmark comparison between the GTX 760 and the Radeon HD 7950 that NVIDIA has included the compute component in it's 700 series of graphics cards. The benchmark shows that a rendered video in SVP 12 using a GTX 760 took pretty much the same time as it did on the AMD Radeon HD 7950. So it kinda of looks like if I want a good and decent NVIDIA GPU for SVP 12 I have to use at least a GTX 760 since the 600 series are kinda duds when it comes to rendering in SVP 12. Although if NVIDIA released a GTX 750 that would probably be a very good balance between price and performance.

At the moment I can't buy this system because I'm trying to save for more important things. Do you guys think it would be beneficial in installing an SSD into my current HP Pavilion (a6260a) system or not. I believe my computer only has a SATA II interface so I know the speed of any SSD would be restricted to 300MB/s read/write max. But when I do purchase this system I could take this SSD out of my current system and install it in my new system.

What are everyones thoughts on that?

No problem!

Well Haswell runs hot anyway, and what your going to be doing with the computer will definitely ramp up the temps and that means the stock cooler has to run faster to try and cool it, which will be VERY loud from what I've heard. For the price of the Hyper 212 Evo, I would just get that so it will cool better and not be as loud as the stock fan.

I've never used a stock cooler before, infact, I think in my first build I got rid of the stock cooler straight away for a Gelid Tranquillo Rev. 2 :P

You can do that if you want, you will notice a massive speed improvement in any computer using an SSD compared to a HDD.

Now I'm reading about AHCI and how it's best to have it enabled for SSDs. I looked in my computers bios and only saw "SATA1 Controller Type" (my PC does have SATA II so I figured it must mean if you have 2 drives installed the SATA1 Controller Type is for setting the controller type for the first HDD, in this case would be an SSD) and the options for this are as follows:

> IDE

> RAID

> AHCI

Now I bought this HP Pavilion system in November 2007. From what I understand, if I install an SSD, is that I would have to select the "AHCI" option. I assume this is correct.

I do realise that it's an ancient PC by todays standards but I should be able to replace it soon enough.

If you're not overclocking, the stock cooler will be enough.

Although if NVIDIA released a GTX 750 that would probably be a very good balance between price and performance.

This is more of a reason to get a 7950 since it is like the 760 rendering videos but is more powerful and has more vram. Also, I'm pretty sure the benchmarks they used were on the cards at stock. What makes the 7950 such a great card is that is a great overclocker, much more so than the 760.

At the moment I can't buy this system because I'm trying to save for more important things. What makes an ssd fast is the random read speed and the memory controller. Sata II will only really bottleneck sequential read/writes and not random reads so it would still be very beneficial and you would not notice the bottleneck.

That's good then. I'll just have to see if I can add an SSD to my system, which I should be able to, and then do some research and purchase one.

Ratings don't matter as long as it performs well.

The Samsung 840 is quite better. The Extreme has rather low random read speeds. The Extreme II is what you would want to look at to match the Samsung 840.

Oh! Okay. I was kinda just looking at the read and write speeds of each. The 840s write speed is 130MB/s vs the Sandisk Extreme's 500+MB/s.

Sequential read/write speeds don't really matter. What you want to check if the random read and memory controller are good. I usually shooting for 80,000 iops and I check reviews for the ssd and its controller.

Using your ssd as a scratchdisk for editing?

Well to make a long story short I've decided I will purchase the new custom PC this year around the September/October timeframe. I am going to restrict my budget to AU$1,800, possibly even AU$1,700, because spending upwards of those amoounts is crazy. I realise the i7 would be better. I really have to choose between having an i7 CPU vs the i5 or an SSD. Because I realise SSDs give the best performance increase I'm going with the i5 and SSD option. Plus I don't believe Intel are going to change their amount of pins for the CPU socket as they already did that going from Ivy Bridge with 1155 pins to the current Haswell pins of 1150. So there's a good chance that I could purchase an i7 CPU later on.

Sorry for the long introduction to my answer but I guess you could say that I will be using the SSD as a scratch disk in a way but it will be my boot drive with the WD HDD as the storage drive.
