New PC Build

Geekazoid

---------------------------------------------------------------------------UPDATE-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay well I've decide to stick with my original build configuration with an addition of an SSD. I realise that it's great to have the best and latest and greatest components but it isn't always practical. I don't have thousands to spend so I want to get the best possible value for my money. I appreciate all of your suggestions and recommendations but at the end of the day I need to choose the best configuration that works for me.

As for AMD GPUs I think for those who love them and swear by them that's great but I for one just prefer NVIDIA GPUs, not only for their decent performance and easy-to-use software but also for their reliability. I'm not trying to sound negative or unappreciative because I am very appreciative of everyone's help but I really was just wanting to know if you guys thought the components for my build were decent ones. Besides that any custom PC components these days are going to beat my 6-year old HP system by far.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi guys,

I will be eventually upgrading my old slow PC and I plan on doing a considerable amount of video editing in Sony Vegas Pro 12, my video editor of choice, I will be having this PC built for my by PC Case Gear, an Aussie PC parts site, and I'm just interested if you guys think the parts that I've picked are good quality and will suffice for what I plan on doing.

Before I list the new PC parts here I will provide a link to my current system so that you can see what I'll be upgrading from to help put things in perspective.

My curent PC is a HP Pavilion a6260a

http://goo.gl/l5J1fs

The memory has been upgraded fron 2GB to 4GB and the GPU upgraded to a GeForce GT 430 w/1GB of DDR3 vRAM.

The system is feeling quite sluggish now and an upgrade is definitely needed.

So the parts for the new PC are as follows:

CASE: Nanoxia Deep Silence 1

PSU: Silverstone Strider Plus 600W ST60F-P

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP

CPU: Intel Core i5 4670 @ 3.4GHz

RAM: Corsair Vengeance CML8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost w/ 2GB GDDR5 vRAM

OD: LG GH24NS95 24x SATA DVD-RW Drive OEM

SSD: Sandisk Extreme 120GB

HDD: Western Digital WD Black 1TB WD1002FAEX

MON: Dell S2440L or Asus MX239H

OS: Windows 8

-------------------------

PRICE: AU$1,800

-------------------------

I have done some research on several of the components, such as the PSU, and they seem to be good. Now I know you guys will probably say "where's the SSD?" Well I do plan on adding and an SSD as finances allow but as for now I'm just sticking to a standard SATA 3 mechanical HDD. Also I realise that some of you guys may recommend an AMD GPU over my selected NVIDIA GPU but I much prefer NVIDIA GPUs and will not be swayed towards an AMD GPU at all.

So overall, what do you guys think, decent system for what I want to do?

I feel that it is but it's always good to have a second, third, fourth, etc. opinion, if ya like.

Any helpful info you guys can give will be greatly appreciated, thanks!

ON A 7 MONTH BREAK FROM THESE LTT FORUMS. WILL BE BACK ON NOVEMBER 5th.

There is no reason to get a non-K prossecor and a Z87 board. Either get the the 4770K (or 4670k if it's a gaming build) or scale back the motherboard to a cheaper chipset. Maybe used the money sabeed to buy a better graphicscard. Other then that it looks OK.

It's a pretty nice system, make sure you get that SSD ASAP, it will make a gigantic difference (it's not a CPU or RAM that make a computer 'fast'). Are you planning on doing any sort of gaming or overclocking? You might want to invest the few extra bucks for a 4770k, so you can squeeze some extra performance out of it ;)

Change chipset to H87 if you are getting a non K CPU or get i5 4670k and put the extra money into a better graphics card or get SSD.

Yeah as others have said, if that is the 4770 and not the 'K' SKU, then save yourself some money and get another mobo that is H87. However, if you can afford the 4770K you might be able to squeeze some more juice from it by overclocking. It does help the rendering times.

If you can get an SSD too you will notice a massive speed improvement!

Also if your video editing, you might want to upgrade the RAM to 16GB down the road, 8GB is good to start off with definitely! But yeah everything looks good!

Are there any considerable difference between a H87 vs Z87 motherboard? I don't plan on overclocking at all.

Down the mobo to H87 or up the CPU to the 4770k

Do not go for h87 with 4770k since it can not over clock like a z87.

If he is going with the 4770K then definitely get a Z87 board, but in his OP he has just stated 4770. So a H87 would save him money if he is going for the 4770.

Are there any considerable difference between a H87 vs Z87 motherboard? I don't plan on overclocking at all.

The biggest one I have heard is that Intel has changed the microcode or something, so that only the 'Z87' chipset can overclock.

I think their is something to do with the PCIe lanes too but I could be wrong, someone could maybe clarify this. I think Z87 allows 8x Dual GPU setups.

Bear in mind though this is for multi-GPU setups, if your running a single card you'll be fine!

I'd say thats a good build but I think he could just get a hyper 212 evo and that would be more than enough and save money especially since hes getting a non k so wont be overclocking

Exactly mate! I just made that as a rough guide point for them! You could remove the SSD, have only 8GB of RAM, lose the water cooler and he would save money. Just incase if he games I gave him a GTX 760 too :D

yeah Id say you gave him every option he could have there he says he wants an ssd later but I would say its better to get the ssd first so he can have it as a boot drive even if it is only a smaller capacity one but thats just me

Thanks for taking the time to do that. It's worth considerring. Do I really need a cooler, I wont be OCing anyway.

So I was going to ask what is the best H87 Mobo but it seems that you favour the Asus H87-PRO. I realise that going to a H87 mobo would reduce the cost by AU$40 that I could put towards a better GPU.

Just up the entire budget, get a TJ07 and a PCI-e SSD while his at it? :P

Obviously he's got a limit to his budget. otherwise you could apply that logic to any build on the forum

Well, if he wants to acually get anything done in heavy video editing, he will NEED to upgrade his budget

Double check everything, I am usually wrong.

Well with Haswell running hot anyway, I would just invest in an aftermarket air cooler to get the job done, plus if you start rendering than the temperature is going to rack up and the stock fan will be blazing loud! :P

Here I have edited that list below:

Bold = Things changed! :) That case is the define R4 from Fractal Design, though a case is more of a personal element, which only you can decide! :P

Plus, I just chose that motherboard, you could get a cheaper one but I just quickly selected it. Well I have included a better GPU in the list, the GTX 760 :D Just incase if you do game, it will give you a bit more grunt on the gaming side, not sure if it has more CUDA cores but if it does than applications that use CUDA will work better on the 760! :D

Crossfire ready.

I went with the 7950 since it's more powerful than the 760, has more vram, and Sony Vegas utilizes OpenCL.
