Am I right in thinking there are eight Megabits in a Megabyte. So am I right in thinking there is 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte..? So what's a gigabit?

One Gigabit is 1/8th of a Gigabyte

8 bits = 1 Byte, so yes... A gigabit are 1024 megabits, which are 1024 kilobits, which are 1024 bits...

b = bit

B = Byte.

8 bits in a byte.

1 gb/s = 1024 mb/s

Basics: b=bit, B=Byte

1 Gigabit = 109 Bits

1 Byte = 8 Bits

And now lets roll (=<

There "are" two "kinds" of x-byte

1 Gigabyte (GB) = 109 Bytes

1 "Gigabyte" (GB), the actual one you use in storage (like in Windows OS), also known as Gibibyte (GiB): 230 Bytes = 10243 Bytes

So:

1024 Megabytes (MB) = 1 Gigabyte

1024 "Megabytes" (MB, aka Mebibyte (MiB))  =  1 "Gigabyte" (Gibibyte (GiB))

I think you're insterested in the ones that are in quotes

Yeah, gotta love SI, JEDEC, etc... twists xD

This is a signature.

The general relationship is this

8 [prefix]bits = 1 [same prefix]byte

1000 [prefix]bits = 1 [next highest prefix]bit

1000 [prefix]bytes = 1 [next highest prefix]byte

1024 [prefix]bibytes = 1 [next highest prefix]bibyte (these prefixes don't really follow the standard metric pattern, instead being kibibyte, mebibyte, gibibyte, etc.)

i pay for 6 m/bs down but my speed is 600kbps? is that gud or bad

That is pretty much average. In theory, you can take your speed, 6 mbps, divide it by 8 and that gives you your 'theoretical max', which in your case would be 750 kbps. However, it is very rare to hit this max because of the overhead that internet protocols have. On average you see that about 10-15% of total bandwidth is overhead so dividing by 10 is normally much more accurate indicator of real world speeds, which in your case would be 600 kbps.

First off, let's get a few things out of the way.

Windows reports file sizes in Bytes and Bits. Windows also uses a Base 2 mathematical system (Compared to the normal Base 10 math used for things like 1 thousand = 1000).

This means that:

There are 8 bits per Byte (a bit is shown as a lower case "b", a Byte is shown as an upper case "B").

There are 1024 Bits in one Kilobit (Shown as 1 Kb). There are 1024 Bytes in one KiloByte (Shown as 1 KB).

There are 128 Bytes (128 KB) in 1024 Bits (1024 b - or 1 Kb)

A Gigabit is 1024 Megabits (Mb - also commonly shown as Mbps when referring to internet speed).

Gigabit Internet, or Gigabit Ethernet, are common Internet and Local Network speeds. There are 128 Megabytes per Gigabit.

There's also a Kibibit/Kibibyte, which is basically the proper term for everything we're describing, but I won't get into that, since Windows doesn't report things using that measurement).
