Depending on where you live, the R9 390 would be a better value for your money. More or less the same performances for the same price, with 8GB of VRAM, so that's slightly more "future proof" as games use more and more VRAM (like shadow of mordor's 6GB)

no such thing as future proof for GPUs

by "future games" are you talking about like next year, or next century, because there is a big difference

also you need to tell us what settings, what resolution, what games, and what framerate are you looking to run

When referring to computers we can look at Moores Law:

"Moore's law is the observation that, over the history of computing hardware, the number of transistors in a dense integrated circuit has doubled approximately every two years."

But yes the 970 is a good GPU, and if you need an upgrade sooner rather than later getting a second 970 in SLI can result in slightly better performance than the 980Ti :)

For a similar price I'd take the R9 390. Don't get me wrong, I have a 970 and it's a really good card for 1080p, but the 390 is pretty much a no brainer here unless you already have a good quality power supply that can handle 450W but not 600W and/or you have a case with lousy cooling.

There is no future-proof card. Even if you get a card with lots of power, you will still have disadvantages of not moving along with features.

A 970 is a good card, good price/performance, so don't worry about it too much.

BUT I would also go for the 390. I just think in the times of growing demand for VRAM a card with 8GB is definitely a good deal.
