Does Future Proofing exists.....?

As of right now you can future proof your PC and most days you can unless, a new standard comes out that cuts you off, a new computing type that has so much more power your computer isn't even worth calling a computer (Quantum Computer), or you realize you can play new AAA titles at medium and not all AAA are ones that you are going to come back to and play for hours and hours.

Future proofing is real, but it's not a literal thing.

If I want a good gaming experience for the next 3-4 years, I'd probably be fine with a GTX980, that is future proofing. Getting 16GB RAM instead of the standard 8GB is the same thing, it's going to suffice for a couple of years.

 

It's a thing you do when you're not looking for the best possible performance, you're just aiming for a decent experience without having to care about upgrades in a long time. No one is so ignorant that they believe buying a computer now is going to last for 10 years or thinking that they can keep playing on ultra settings for 5 years.

my systems usually last around 5 years +/- half and GPU about every 3-4 depending on advancements and prices. I normaly don't buy the best of the best as it's overpriced but go for the second third or 80% mark. as the last 20% are way more expensive most of the time. i.e. 5960x is 3 times the price of a 5820k which get's good real world results but no bragging rights.

I'm actually right now replacing my system and whent from 2500K to 5820K (I only do about 20% gaming and the rest profits from the hyperthreading). braking my habits I will be upgrading the GPU after only 2 years but only due to the fact I'm selling the old system which will pay for the new GPU.

Futureproofing has never existed. Computers will always become more powerful and all are outdated in their own due time. Here at LTT we always recommend that people buy the best they can afford (something we can and do help with) so that they are not constantly spending more and more money down the road constantly upgrading an aging machine, chasing after a false sense of futureproofness. It doesn't exist.

 

That's not to say that a computer becomes useless, not at all. Core 2 Duos are still very competent processors for the average joe's facebook machine or Youtube box, and a Core 2 Quad Q6600 is still a great CPU for mid-tier budget-oriented gaming rigs. Those processors are very very old now but they hold their own. The older processors are still sometimes serving as routers or NASes.

I see more benefit in investing more in your build now but it's not like essential.

Future Proofing doesn't really exist in the literal sense.

 

I personally want to play at 1440p because I could probably drop in a mid to higher end GPU later on and be set for 1440p gaming at ultra settings for a couple more years. Unless games start going after CPU performance (Maybe Adobe might end up being able to use more CPU resources, I don't know.)

I feel with a 5820K I'll be set for a year or two longer than I would with Devils Canyon-K/Haswell Refresh-K/Haswell-K or Skylake-S and that I think makes it worth it.

Say the R9 Fury (or R9 490(X)) or 980 Ti (or Pascal Equivalent) won't be enough come a few years down the line for mid to ultra settings at 1440p then I suspect I won't need to get an overkill GPU because they'll become more target at 4K and higher.

 

The 5820K would most likely handle that new GPU better than a Z97 or Z170 CPU could.

I mean I personally think advancement in technology will be finite just because our sun has about 5 billion years left in it, our Galaxy and the Andromeda are going to collide 4 billion years, at the rate of destruction our planet has about a billion years left for it to be habitable.

 

This is so going to go off topic eventually...

 

So I mean unless we can figure out some way to keep our planet habitable, add additional life to the sun and divert the collision of the Milky Way and Andromeda or find a way to get from one place to another with out taking so long to get there.

Perhaps I lack imagination sometimes, or maybe I'm a little more pessimist than realist. I don't know.

It depends on if you are still satisfied with your system. For some things you can get a pretty good life span from them. For examples I got my 4770k over a year ago, but since you CPU market has slowed down nothing new has even come out (4790k is refresh). I am still satisfied completely by it. Even if you went and splurged on a 2600k back in the day it would still be holding up pretty nicely now even years after it has come out. When I got my RAM 4 was considered just enough will 8 was considered optimal. I got 12Gb and I have yet to have any lack of performance compared to what there is today, but with games using more and more I am glad I got it. It really comes down to what component. If you look at just the difference between the 680 and 980ti are in just 2 generations the gap is huge and many games now with the 680 can not run maxed out, many won't even have enough VRAM. So it really comes down to the exact part, as some parts have slowed down in advancement speed greatly. Although there should be no reason that buying the best of today will be better than the best of tommorow.

It gets pretty fuzzy predicting what software will be like more than two years from now, and face it, it is the future software that determines how "future proof" a computer is.

 

 

Considering my current needs and what I "expect" to need in the near future (one to two years from now) I can build a "future proof" machine for about $1500 US and it will probably be good longer than I expect and last me three or four years (keyword is probably), with maybe, MAYBE one graphics card upgrade.

 

I can also build a "FUTURE PROOF" machine for around $8000 US and it will give me bragging rights for about one year, last maybe one year longer than the $1500 machine before it needs replacing and require upgrading my SLI/Crossfire array on a yearly basis.

 

 

You do the math.

I found a number of people giving their views for or against future proofing your RIG,actually it transformed into a heated argument between 2 sides.

 

So what is the exact no of years a person should put his money into  a RIg to last(Play at ultra or High only at a given resolution).

 

Should we put only that much amount of money on components that will let us play at a given resolution and setting for now(1-1.5 yrs) and the cash saved can be used to buy more advanced components(GPU,CPU) in near future( > 1.5 - 2 yrs and after )

 

or think about the future and spend more by buying expensive stuff that may be overkill for now but will last for 3-4 yrs(does it really last for 3-4 yrs ,some people even said 6 yrs).

 

I need some views on this topic.
