Is it un practical would it be to buy a 980? Can I overclock the 970 to match?

yoshiii

Hello,

How wasteful of money would it be to buy a 980?

I am stuck between a 970, 980, 980ti.  The ti is expensive. I an swing a 970 or a 980 but I am worried about the 970 being a mistake to buy for the long run with 1440p.

But I know people say the 980 is a waste because of the price so close to the 970.

But I feel the 980 would be a better buy for 1440p than a 970 for the long run.

Can I over clock a 970 to match the speeds and performance  of a 980 on 1440p?

You are better off with the 980, if the Ti is expensive for you :)

If you want to be future proof, I would suggest go with the 980Ti, its expensive, but its basically a Titan X performance which is much cheaper.

WIth my Gigabyte 970 I've had to lessen the memory usage with GTA V, but having the extra fast 500MB of vram on the 980 could be put to better use in 1440p gaming.

For 1440p the 980 at least would be the better option, but if you want that longer lasting 'future proof' maybe even try to save up for the Ti

But to answer your question, yeah if you get a good overclock you can get stock 980 performance out of a 970, Digital Foundry have some nice in game comparisons on youtube between an overclocked 970 and a normal 980

But keep in mind you can then just overclock the 980 too and get better performance out of that

I am more willing to spend the money on a 980 vs 970.

I am tempted to go out and by the 970 because its cheaper but I feel I would want the 980 after that.

Main reason I am looking at the 980 is because the software that I use takes advantage of Cuda Cores, I use my pc for graphic design, 3D design, rendering and movie making.

In that case would the 980 better?

Tbh if I were you I would get the 980 if you can, it'll run 1440p nicely for your games, and while I don't think the performance increase in rendering and things like that will be 'huge' it will still obviously be an increase which will help.

ok

I think the 980 is better than the 970. But I keep reading how people claim that the price of the 980 is too high.

I am moving up from a 660 so anything high up will be better.

The 980 would be very wasteful, in terms of cost USD to performance ratio.

Which translates to 18.2% and 17.4% performance increase respectively.

My recommendation is to avoid the 980 AND the 970. The 390 has 8GB of ram and performs better than the 970, though not as powerful as a 980 it's the go to card for performance to cost at the moment. The added memory also makes crossfire viable in the future.

I am living in Japan {American} and the prices for a Ti is crazy.  The cheapest I have seen so far is about 850 dollars for one.

I found a MSI 980 here for about 58 dollars more than what it would cost to order it from New Egg.  Is that too much extra to pay?  I don't know how long it would take to reach me if I ordered from the states.

Ti are expensive.  I still have to by a 1440p monitor for work.

Can I over clock a 970 to match the speeds and performance  of a 980 on 1440p?

You could probably get close to a stock 980 with a heavily overclocked 970, but you have to consider that the 980 can be overclocked as well. The 980 is a less efficient use of money than the 970, but it's undeniably a faster card.

wrong, not heavily overclock, just overclock to the range most gtx970 do on average. 1500/8000 = faster then gtx 980 stock reference. As you can see on the video above. OR in this review http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/gigabyte_geforce_gtx_970_g1_gaming_review,26.html. This is a MILD overclock which my card can do perfectly stable without increasing voltage or powerlimit.

would take forever, and mabye you would have to pay taxes. How much is the gtx970 compared to the 980 where you live?

I get regular American mail, work for American Company so we use US mail but still may take awhile because never know how long it will take unless I do priority mail.

The 970, MSI is 374 dollars.

why 1440p and not 4k?? 4k costs less in some cases and is a much better experience. paired with a 980ti it's an awesome combo

In terms of overall performance you're looking at roughly a 15%-20% gain over the 970 with the 980, and the difference is more apparent at resolutions like 1440p and 4k where more VRAM is used. Regardless of people being able to match the 980's performance by overclocking their 970's, when you overclock the 980 it pulls ahead again, showing the strength of a fully unlocked GM204 chip and 4GB of VRAM at full speed. Price wise the 390(x) is technically a better option, but you said programs you use benefit from Cuda, so we'll throw those out the door.

$150 is a lot of money for the majority of people, and stepping up to the 980Ti, however great a value it is per dollar, is still a $650 purchase over a $500 (and sometimes less with rebates) purchase. At higher resolution the 980 will be the better buy over the 970, simply because there isn't an in-between option currently from Nvidia that meets your needs.

I very much enjoy Jayztwocents' advice in this regard: Buy the best card you can afford right now, and regret nothing.
