why is the Twin Frozr V cooler louder on a 390

GTX 970 is 30db, and the 390 is 40db. Why is that? Higher heat output?

I wanna see how the STRIX performs on the 390. Looking at ASUS's site, they have the STRIX for R9 285 but not for 290 etc?

Higher heat output -> Higher fan speed needed to keep temps the same as a GPU with lower heat output -> Higher fan speed = more noise

For the same reason the Gigabyte g1 sounds fine on a 970, but sounds like a semi truck going 70 miles an hour on a 980 ti. More power consumption means the fans have to run at a higher speed to keep the same temps.

 

At least that's the most likely cause. Its also possible the twin frozr's heat pipes don't all make contact with the GPU on a 390, because it was designed for a 970. Wouldn't be the first time that's happened. The ACX 2.0 had the same problem, it was designed for the 980 and didn't work as well on the 970 until they modified it.

 

It could also simply be two different testers measuring two different cards under different conditions such as different ambient temps, cases with different ventilation and air flow, or simply a different acoustical environment.

Try taking a look at a video of a gigabyte g1 980 ti. Those fans are working pretty hard trying to keep that beast cool and putting an immense amount of heat in your case.
