After apple, Facebook music streaming service

jos
Facebook has reportedly sat down with execs from Sony, Universal and Warner - the who-is-who of tune distributors - for preliminary testing of the music industry waters.  People already spend a ton of time on Facebook — over 40 minutes a day in the US — but those numbers would dramatically increase if your musical existence was tied in any meaningful way to the service. One source suggested that Facebook's video platform may play a role in its plans, as The Information first reported. The company wants to do something "unique" according to sources, but how that will manifest is yet to be determined.

tying this with earlier reports of competing with youtube.. facebook is getting too much diversified.

Facebook will fail with this, they took it too far when they tried to make games other than Farmville.

As much as people hate these new services, they could be a good thing as competition drives down prices. So long as exclusivity deals stay out of this...

What about FLAC?

Nope, honestly for 99% of people 99% of the time using 99% of headphones that are sold a 320kbps mp3 will sound as good as a FLAC file

No company will offer it due to restrictive data plans, demands on servers, cost of storage, etc etc etc its not economical and doesnt make a difference enough to the end user

Oh yeah I completely forgot they existed, £20 for FLAC vs £10 for 320 AAC...Double the cost just to get FLAC

Yeah, not really worth it unless you're an audiophile. Most people that use spotify/apple music etc just use a standard pair of headphones rather than high end monitors

Yeah I would argue even on a mid range pair like my Sennheiser momentums, or my MMX300s (basically DT770s), i cannot tell the difference in a blind test reliably.

I imagine if I had some HD650s or HD700s i MIGHT be able to tell.. maybe worth it with some £1000 HD800s with a top end DAC/AMP connected to my pc/phone

Indeed. Tried it with AKG K-612 PRO and I couldnt't tell the difference. Will have to try it when a friend comes back from Austria with his 650. And I doubt it even then the difference will be that big, if there will even be a difference. I wish I could get my hands on some high end Grados for 1 day, instead of trying them in a shop.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.

Facebook also wants to hop onto the wagon...sigh

I will happily stick with Spotify and their 320 bit rate.

Offtopic

I can hear the difference between FLAC and MP3 320 :P Sadly not on my portable players or headsets.
