So, I've been following the HE-400s series and was wondering what other's were thinking about it, are these specifically for on the go smartphone use? I'm confused as to what their remaking on this model, or what was improved. I already have the 400i version so I myself won't be purchasing these, I'm very interested in trying them though. What does the "s" do over the generic 400 series? Anyone know? From the picture's I've seen they look identical, maybe the 400's will go down in price though, I hope their not a rebranded 400 that sound the same. Their to be $300.00 dollars too which is strange to me.

I believe it's a single sided planar, overall more down-to-earth looking, tweaked HE-400i

Tyll Hertsens had always complained about hifiman's treble and his praise for this headphone indicates it will sound more warm than HE-500 / HE-560 at the very least.

Seems like hifiman wants to take philips market share from fidelio X2, this headphone will go head to head with the triumpharent and fidelio x2.

I'm almost 100% sure I'll be grabbing this one and compare it with my K7xx, I'm going to sell the one I like the least

Based on what little I've heard, it will be a more fun sound than the he-400i; interpret that as you will, but I expect more warmth and bass impact. Probably at the expense of some refinement/detail/vocals.

Personally, I am very interested in these. I've wanted to upgrade to a reasonably priced planar for awhile, but I've worried that something like the HE-400i would be too close to the DT 880 to warrant it; plus I'm not willing to shell out $500.

After seeing initial review I'm probably going to get this as since I love my t50rp but want a more open sound. I can't think of any open planar around this price point.

That makes a lot of sense, tell me how they sound if you do decide to pick one up.

Interesting, I got the 400i to be a less fun sounding version of the DT 990 I have, better bass would be good the bass on the 400i is decent just, not the best... sorta underwhelming but still very good. Yeah the 400i seems very close to the DT 880, and the whole point of upgrading is to get a different experience, from what I'm hearing in this thread the HE 400s should be right up your ally then, we will see..

I am COMPLETELY SOLD! I WANT ONE NAO!

Regarding where it lies, I'm not sure since its $300 and competes against the X2 (both open-back and priced the same, though the X2 gets minor price drops at times, but anyways...), and IIRC, isn't the 400s meant to be an improved version of the 400i? Correct me if I'm wrong on that, just can't exactly remember.

Don't think it's a revised version of the 400i, rather just a different model of the 400i for people seeking more "warmth"

I knew it....HE400s, that lying son of a.....

But seriously, 'one of the highest efficiency planar in the world'?? Really? Do they have any idea that LCD-3 is 102dB/mW??

Well the LCD-3 is sorta like 10 times the price though, but yeah I think their trying to market these as a low impedance headphone which I think is funny.

Nope, it's an entry-level planar. The HE-400i is more mid-fi, although it punches above it's weight. Given that hifiman cans usually fall in price over their lifetime, the 400s will likely become extremely competitive. Note that the original HE-400 had an MSRP of $400.

The lowest they went for HE-400 was $250, bundled with a genuine hifiman hard shell case, if I remembered correctly. Then it went back up to $299 with no bonus, then extinct.

Even the good ol' (and cheap) T50RP is (or was. is it still around?) 97dB/mW.

Always liked hifiman, but not a big fan of the efficiency of their planars. I think 93 is actually their highest.

But it means they're kwalitee if they're hard to drive

Yeah, no wonder those 40dB/mW headphones were always sold out. They must be sooooo good, given their low efficiency, and also need a 50kW amplifier to drive them...

Has a release date been mentioned?

Nope not yet, they did have a finished product at a audio event earlier for people to try though so shouldn't be too much longer, forgot the name of the event.
