Horizontal or Verticle CPU cooler

I have a Be Quiet! Pure Rock. Should I mount it vertical or horizontal. I also have a Be Quiet! Silent Base 800 case. I meant vertical not verticle

Either way as long as the air is being pushed to an exhaust :) (Don't claim to be an airflow guru.... just makes sense)

glad to hear that :D I really want to mount the cooler horizontal so the Be Quiet! Logo is facing the right way, not sideways.

if you make it vertical you may have compatibility issues with your ram heatspreaders, and the fan would be sucking air very close to the GPU

usually horizontally is the right way (and somethimes only way) to mount it

horizontal = fan blowing horizontally through heatsink, from front to back of the case

vertical = fan underneath heatsink blowing towards top of case

do you mean horizontal?

hard to say, but on what i would call a vertical mounting the fan would be blowing from bottom to top, therefore being obstructed somewhat by the GPU.

 

and my version of horizontal would have the fan blowing air from the front of the case to the back. 

 

Using my examples i would recommend horizontal

Aftermarket 980Ti >= Fury X >= Reference 980Ti > Fury > 980 > 390X > 390 >= 970 > 380X > 380 >= 960 > 950 >= 370 > 750Ti = 360

ahh i got it. I got a little bit confused. since you said horizontal, I thought you meant the cooler being horizontal, with the fan blowing up.

It's all feasible, but it'll really depend on the airflow through the case what's best. You're probably best off mounting the CPU cooler in such a way that its airflow is in line with the airflow in the case as a whole. If you've got front intakes and a rear exhaust on your case for example, as many people do, I would mount the CPU cooler vertically, so that the air can flow smoothly into the case, through the CPU cooler and out of the case again, all in a neat, low-turbulence, straight line.

Isn't horizontal like - opposed to vertical | ? And GPUs heat/backplate isn't issue in most ATX mobos where first slot isn't used (x1).
