Considering new Macbook, convince me otherwise?

I'm buying a Macbook 2015 purely because it looks good. And I'm a sucker for good looking devices. 

 

Could I get a better PC? Of course.

 

But I have my desktop for that. And Windows trackpads are a joke.

Pfff, and a stupid gimicky vibrate thing is better. Yes I have tried it and it sucks. Also the keyboard is the worst thing ever

Right... but unlike some laptops, the fans won't spin under normal usage, is what I was trying to say.

Regardless the newer Intel CPU should reduce the power consumption, so it will reduce heat and that should reduce noise, so it should help. I personally expect 2 models of the Surface Pro 4. A Core M without any fans (and performance would be similar to the new MacBook), and one with a fan with Haswell-U or Skylake CPU.

Image needs a file extension on the url. In this case, the image is picked based on a code generated from the URL, and in their case, they setup the server to return an error message of Access denied if you try and request from the URL page any image files.

When you push harder it doesn't vibrate to make it feel like you have clicked as hard as you did. Also if you click it too lightly it doesn't click and you end up double clicking then clicking again by clicking once clicking harder because you didn't think you clicked then double clicking because of pressure clicking. Try one out in real life and see for yourself

When you push harder it doesn't vibrate to make it feel like you have clicked as hard as you did. Also if you click it too lightly it doesn't click and you end up double clicking then clicking again by clicking once clicking harder because you didn't think you clicked then double clicking because of pressure clicking. Try one out in real life and see for yourself

Also only USB C is trash. Now I have to carry 50 adapters. They advertise it to edit videos and stuff so SD card reader, USB mouse, maybe a headphone and microphone, and the battery still doesn't last that long

Also only USB C is trash. Now I have to carry 50 adapters. They advertise it to edit videos and stuff so SD card reader, USB mouse, maybe a headphone and microphone, and the battery still doesn't last that long

what you listed only needs one adapter mate. 

 

 

For me personally for note taking, that doesn't matter for me as I haven't plugged anything besides headphones and power into a laptop for years, and it can do that

Yea. I only had a quick look, and it feels fine when I went to the Apple store. Seams fine under regular use. If I have time, I want to give it another try at a less crowded moment to have a better feel.

In any case, please take your time for buying a system. New models from all manufactures should be released in the coming months as Windows 10 will be released. Broadwell-U and Skylake are coming soon as well. Might be best to see.

What I did, although I didn't live a in a dorm, my university was downtown, and I was taking the bus/metro to go home, is that I did my first semester with pen a paper. This allowed me to better evaluate what I need as specs and features for my needs.

Oh and keep in mind, if you have a system you like, call the manufacture before buying it in stores. Many of them has free shipping, and assuming it is not Apple or Microsoft, you can get at least 10-12% off (which is the retail store margins) when you ask for a better price (why would you not ask for this :)). You can sometimes get additional some accessories or free upgrade like more RAM or something if you push a bit.

As for Apple or Microsoft, you have student discounts.

While I don't normally get extended warranties, for a device that I'll have in hand daily, at school, where you can get bumped and all that, and I need it always. I recommend getting it. I always get it directly from the manufacture for the best service, and genuine part. I would get accidental damage protection as well, if it is an extra.

In the case of Microsoft, this include Microsoft Surface line and also other computers they sold from their stores online/offline (which by the way are junk free. See for "Signature Edition" on the model name), you have Microsoft Complete, which is a 2 year warranty with accidental damage protection. If an accident occurs, and need replacement (up to 2 times), you pay 50$, and they ship you a system (I don't know if it is a refurbished one or new one. Never tried). If you have a physical MS store near you, then they'll probably give you a new one if they still sale the system, similarly to Apple.

Dell has on-site service, which is a small premium (I think included in the XPS line), where a trained technician comes at your place, the next business day, at the time you want, to replace the part. This allows you to always have the system in hand, make sure that the problem is fixed, and well that the problem was properly understood over the phone. It sucks when you need to ship your system wait 2 weeks for shipping time and repair, and get the system back to realize that they didn't fix the problem, as they changed a different part as the person on the phone miss understood your problem.

They made it super thin to be portable and be on the go that's why all the extra battery, not strapped to a table with 5687943 adapters and constantly plugged in. It's a piece of trash no matter what.

Yea. I only had a quick look, and it feels fine when I went to the Apple store. Seams fine under regular use. If I have time, I want to give it another try at a less crowded moment to have a better feel.

In any case, please take your time for buying a system. New models from all manufactures should be released in the coming months as Windows 10 will be released. Broadwell-U and Skylake are coming soon as well. Might be best to see.

What I did, although I didn't live a in a dorm, my university was downtown, and I was taking the bus/metro to go home, is that I did my first semester with pen a paper. This allowed me to better evaluate what I need as specs and features for my needs.

Oh and keep in mind, if you have a system you like, call the manufacture before buying it in stores. Many of them has free shipping, and assuming it is not Apple or Microsoft, you can get at least 10-12% off (which is the retail store margins) when you ask for a better price (why would you not ask for this :)). You can sometimes get additional some accessories or free upgrade like more RAM or something if you push a bit.

As for Apple or Microsoft, you have student discounts.

While I don't normally get extended warranties, for a device that I'll have in hand daily, at school, where you can get bumped and all that, and I need it always. I recommend getting it. I always get it directly from the manufacture for the best service, and genuine part. I would get accidental damage protection as well, if it is an extra.

In the case of Microsoft, this include Microsoft Surface line and also other computers they sold from their stores online/offline (which by the way are junk free. See for "Signature Edition" on the model name), you have Microsoft Complete, which is a 2 year warranty with accidental damage protection. If an accident occurs, and need replacement (up to 2 times), you pay 50$, and they ship you a system (I don't know if it is a refurbished one or new one. Never tried). If you have a physical MS store near you, then they'll probably give you a new one if they still sale the system, similarly to Apple.

Dell has on-site service, which is a small premium (I think included in the XPS line), where a trained technician comes at your place, the next business day, at the time you want, to replace the part. This allows you to always have the system in hand, make sure that the problem is fixed, and well that the problem was properly understood over the phone. It sucks when you need to ship your system wait 2 weeks for shipping time and repair, and get the system back to realize that they didn't fix the problem, as they changed a different part as the person on the phone miss understood your problem.

thanks! not sure if you saw it earlier, but my sister has a friend who gets a pretty decent discount though apple, so I need to see what a macbook or Pro would cost though that. then need to check the student pricing for the surface. 

 

I know, im excited for the next gen of mobile chips. hopefully AMD announces something soon to really push Intel in the mobile department. It may be possible as AMD seems to be focusing on the low end market. if not, second gen of this 5 watt fanless stuff should be great.

I am trying to remember the last time I had to have a bunch of stuff plugged into my laptop.   I think I may have used the card reader once on my MBA and I haven't used a single port on my MBP except the thunderbolt to plug in an external monitor.  I actually regret at times not going with the Macbook.  

 

It isn't for you?  Great.   Then it isn't for you.  That hardly qualifies it as trash.  And calling it such contributes nothing to the conversation.

Hell of a lot more then price to performance. I can buy a server rack thats equal CPU wise+32gigs of ECC ram to my 1000$ cpu build for 125$. I could buy 10 of those instead of a macbook. I could render whatever the hell I wanted instantly, but good luck taking 10 sever racks to school.

I decided against the cheaper but riskier route and went for T450s. The risks didn't outweigh the benefits for me on this one.

Seems like a nice deal. Two caveats you might want to consider:

  1. 4GB of RAM. That's enough (barely) for day-to-day usage, but if you want/need to do anything more exotic (big programs, VMs, ...) that might prove insufficient. The RAM on the XPS12 is soldered on, meaning you can't upgrade it.
  2. The keyboard. That keyboard *looks* (haven't tried it) the same as the one in the Dell M3800 I got from work. If it is, then STEER CLEAR. It's the absolute worst keyboard I've ever experienced in the history of anything that has buttons. I swear to <insert deity here>, one of the biggest reasons I'm paying for a new laptop myself is that freaking POS excuse for a keyboard. Might be different on the XPS 12, though.

If both of those things are a non-issue for you, then I think that laptop is an excellent deal :)

right. the big thing for me is the ram. but if its just for note taking and such, wondering if it would be a issue or not. and WIndows is getting more and more geared towards low ram products(tablets ect)

Windows 10 will run perfectly smoothly on a single channel 2GB of RAM system (tested on my side. Very responsive, and Windows will switch the way it manages memory consuming only ~1GB). While that is great, using Firefox (forget Chrome), or Edge, everything will be fine as long as you limit your tabs, and limit the number of programs on the back to the minimum. Music + Skype + Firefox with 3-4 tabs, is reaching the limit. 2GB is really for light office work environment.

The more RAM you have the more Windows will consume, however, eventually stop. On my Surface Pro 2 I have 8GB of RAM, and Windows 10 with Firefox with 2 tabs open (this forum twice), Outlook, Trillian and Skype, all together consumes ~2.9GB of RAM. So probably ~2.7GB if I close everything.
