Oem and retail question. Please help

JamesIsBatman

Hi everyone! So I purchased a copy of windows 8 and received it in the mail today. It says "oem" and then I found out there was a "retail" version. I found this out on another forum. I am building a new system for myself. I DID NOT open the packaging yet. Was I supposed to get the retail version? Or is the OEM version fine? I'm very confused. Please help  :(

Oem is fine. The retail version is upgrade only. If you're building a new system oem is the only option.

The oem and the retail version are pretty much the same thing. The oem is just cheaper, lacks the bloatware that you would often get and is pretty much designed for system builders.

There is nothing wrong with the oem version and the only differences that I think you have is the limited support from Microsoft that you would otherwise get with a retail version.

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?

This guy is right. Assassin is not.

Actually I am right. There is no retail version of windows 8 for new builds. Only upgrade versions come on retail packaging.

You know what. You're right. It seemed too ridiculous to be true, but I looked into it further and proved myself wrong.

But still, the OEM version will work just fine James :P

Technically, you aren't supposed to use the OEM edition because in the EULA, it says you should then resell the computer and provide support on it to use the OEM version, but a lot of people do use it and have no problems, so as long as your fine with limited MS support (you've got this forum and I highly doubt you're a tech noob because you're here), you'll be fine. That's not to say it's right though.
