Hello! I was just wondering your overall thoughts about the 300 series. Thanks!

Edit: should I buy it or wait for 200 series prices to fall?

P.S. I am reasonably new to to the forums.

Happy to help with any tech problems. Windows 10 installing guide here.

It's fine, not much of an improvement over the 200 series, but hopefully it'll drive those prices even further down and we can get amazing price to performance for the 290 and 290X.

Scam at it's current state. When they reduce prices below 200 series it will be average. Now it's better to just buy 200 series.

Very disappointed, this rebranding(ish) with small updates really annoys me. And the fact that they took forever to release their stuff. Now, I'm not sure I like either company.

EDIT- Because of this, I have changed my desktop backgroud from Radeon graphics to a new one, with which I am not disappointed with.

Just over priced, when you can get a 290/x for bout $50 cheaper for the same performance as a 970. and just an inborn hatred I guess, no real reason, I just don't. I also don't like the fact that they are like " here, have a 980, the best consumer gpu!", then a little while later are like, "hey about that 980 you bought, we now have a 980ti which you now really want, but you've wasted all your money on the less powerful 980, so... sorry suckas!, or maby you could buy a 980ti? we will get more money and you will have a better gpu than what you had literally two-three moths back ( I can't remember exactly when)."

From what I saw in tinytomlogan's review, I approve of what they did.  But only because MSI took it and went above and beyond with it.

From what I've seen from XFX, they just half-assed it and didn't really improve anything, MSI added tons of stuff and I'd definitely say that's worth the extra 70$ or so bucks.

Why develop a new set of GPUs when these are still competitive with everything up to the 970? The fury, fory x, and fury nano will compete with the 980, ti, and titan x. They don't need to release a new GPU, why waste loads of money on doing it?

Because they are barely better than their predecessors, it's a wast of money to make something like those, However, I am still waiting for the benchmarks n the fury x, then I will judge...

The point is that they don't need to be better than their predecessors. The 290x and 390x are about the same perf as the 970 and have about the same price as it too. That's why the 390x is a rebrand. It doesn't cost nearly as much to rebrand a 290x as it does to develop a whole new core.

Let's say that someone is looking to buy a new GPU. They want performance on the level of the 970/390x. AMD can just sell them a 390x (which cost a lot less to make) which will have the same performance. If they developed a new core with this level of performance, then it would be priced the same and the only difference would be that AMD has to spend more. Now, let's say someone is making a budget build. They want performance on par with the 750ti. They are either going to get a 750ti or a 265. What benefit would the consumer get from a new chip from AMD that performed the same and was priced the same? None.

If it has been too long without new cards, there will be new features that older ones do not support, so AMD or Nvidia has to roll out a new chip, but for the time being it makes no sense spending loads of their R&D budget to make a card that nobody benefits from. This way, AMD has more money (sort of the point of a business), you get a card with the same performance for the same price (or lower as they fall over time so price:performance scales over time in accordance with Moore's law) and everyone is happy. Well, unless you're a Debby downer who can't be happy with a 265 and wants a 980ti.

Stupid as hell, in my opinion. I've said this in my own thread and a few others, but I am extremely bothered by the fact that the only new GPUs (Fury Nano, Fury, Fury X) are not part of the new generation of R9 cards, the R9 300 series.

The pricing on some of the cards also doesn't make sense. Furthermore, some of the cards are a downgrade or sidegrade to the same tier card in the 200 series. For example the 270 to the 370 is a downgrade... I'd really like to know what the hell they were thinking.

Next the pricing of the R9 390 and 390X... the 390 costs as much as a GTX 970, while the 970 outperforms at 1080P and 1440P while consuming less power and being Nvidia (that on its own obviously does not provide a benefit, but as far as average non-savvy consumers are concerned the more popular company and better marketed one is better). The R9 390X performs only slightly better while costing almost as much as a GTX 980... same situation again, it gets crushed in 1080P and 1440P while roughly matching the GTX 980 at 4K (while the 980 consumes less power, will OC better etc.).

The lineup should have looked more like this IMO:

R9 390X - Fiji XT - $700

R9 390 - Fiji - $500

R9 380X - Grenada XT (improved 290X) 4GB - $350

R9 380 - Grenada (improved 290) 4GB - $275

R9 375 - Tonga XT 4GB - $240

R9 370X - Tonga 4GB - $210

R9 370 - Tonga 2GB - $175

R7 360 - R7 260X 2GB - $115

Intel i5-4690K @ 3.8GHz || Gigabyte Z97X-SLI || 8GB G.Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz || Asus GTX 760 2GB @ 1150 / 6400 || 128GB A-Data SX900 + 1TB Toshiba 7200RPM || Corsair RM650 || Fractal 3500W

-snip-

Well, If someone wanted the performance of a 970 witha lower price, I would recommend the 290x, and maby oc it a little, the 390x is more expensive than the 970 by about $60 and is only slightly better, it's the fury/x that is supposed to take on the 980/ti. So why spend an extra $+-100 for only a little more performance (other than dx12 really) for only near 10% better performance (if I remember correctly, too lazy to google anymore  -_-.

Getting a little late and tired, so I can't think of any other answers right now, I like this discussion we're having though.

A re vrand is cool as lone as they inprove the produce enough to worent it persanaly i will believe nothing untill i see linus do a 3rd party benchmark on the 400 series as well as the fury, fury x and nano. i am hopeing that the fury x beats the 980 ti and if amd make fury x cheaper than the 980 ti nvidia will have to drop there prices and we will all benafet nothing worse than a one sidrd price war i wont a fury x or a 980 ti cheaped dm it

Everyone complains that the 390x is just a re-brand. It competes with the GTX 980 in performance, the new Maxwell card

What does that say about Nvidia? Their new architecture card in the same "tier bracket" is competing with AMD's "same old shit rebrand" (Not taking into account power consumption)

I agree with some of the points you made there, particularly the 980 -> 980ti rush.

However the part about $50 cheaper but similar performance of a 290/x.. If you pay your own bills you shouldn't be saying that.

The power consumption plays a huge role if you're really nit picking on every bit of price:performance saving you can get.

I'd really prefer to spend the $50 initiall to save myself 150w per hour of gaming xD

Whoever designed the 290x deserves an applause. Seriously, a few small tweaks to the 290x and it becomes a 390x that has the performance that rivals a 980.

That's just the launch price I think, I'm sure the 390x will drop a bit soon. It's also got 4gb more of Vram which allows for higher VRAM clock speeds (higher capacity VRAM modules) and is clocked higher than the 290x, so it doesn't really make sense to price it exactly the same, but I think that in a month or two it will be in the price range of the 970. What do you mean about spending +/-$100? Fury is launching at $550 and fury x at $650, I think so I'm pretty sure they're undercutting 980ti and titan x.

And I'm fine with rebrands, but make them better than what just happened. (if thats even possible, I will do the google more in the morning on this).

They don't really have to be better to compete, but they are better. 280 is the 285 + VRAM, the 390/x got more VRAM which allows for a faster clock on it along with a +50Mhz clock bump on the core which isn't too much. Oh, and something with improved voltage lowering the TDP by 25w is nice too.
