What is the value of some CPUs?

Hello LTT forums!

I've run into a bit of a dilemma. I recently acquired a server machine from a friend, who got it god knows where. I opened it up expecting to gut the system just to have something to do. Inside there was 64 GB of RAM (8x8GB), the most I've ever worked with. I looked it up online, and the sell prices for 8GB PC2-5200 RAM sticks were astronomical. At this point, I figured that the system was more powerful than I thought. I lifted the CPU covers (two of them), and under each was an AMD Opteron 8439 SE hex core processor. Once again, these are the largest processors I've ever worked with. I checked the online prices for the processors. Each 8439 was going for over a grand. I checked some other sites. 2.5 and 3 grand, respectively. As much as I'd love to have 3-6 grand, how do I know if it's legit? Can anyone help me evaluate why on earth the prices are so high?

I'd put it up for sale and see what happens, If you can snag a few grand from old hardware - then dayum.

It's probably expensive because it's vintage and in short supply.

Older RAM is more expensive than newer RAM. Those processors are also server grade.

Since the CPUs are no longer produced, the prices may have never been changed or someone is trying to rip people off.

Those prices are probably so high because when the processors were new thats how much they went for but now they go for $60-$215

I don't really know about server grade stuff (i only know that AMD Opteron stuff is server grade), but i do know that.

Older RAM sells for more than the newer one. Older generation don't like upgrading to newer platforms... That's why whenever my father's colleagues ask me to check their PC, and upgrade it, i almost always refuse... They want to add more DDR RAM... That's expensive, especially if you buy new (and that's if you can even find it)...

And, server stuff always sells for a lot :D

Sell it either way, you can't lose any money if you didn't pay for it :)

List prices mean nothing. I can list a pencil for $1 million. What matters is the bid price - what people are will to buy things at and most of those prices are going to be significantly cheaper because they are legacy products no longer in production and not used in enterprise settings.

Thanks!

Is it ECC RAM? If yes then you've got a good bit of money right there.

They will NOT go for the price of those websites, i doubt they will go for 500$.

Someone in Germany is selling them for 150€ a piece, http://www.ebay.de/itm/AMD-Opteron-8439-SE-6C-2-8GHz-6MB-L3-4800-Sockel-F-OS8439YDS6DGN-/370862568674?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item565921b4e2
