Depends on the pricing, I've not looked at 390x pricing, and 290xs cost as much as 970s these days.

For 1080p I'd be inclined to say get the 970, unless either the 290x is a good chunk cheaper or the 390x costs the same.

Looking at 970's... prices are a load lower than i thought...

And this looks nice.

290x is not available no more on scan.

Also i will be using my heavily OC'd Phenom II until 2016 when Zen arrives, at that point if AMD fail me, i will just buy Skylake.

290x, (whats your psu, and do you plan on xfiring later on?)

two 290x's would be near 600 watts, so if you don't have a psu that is +- 850 watts, I would go sli 970's (if you ever want to sli / xfire later on.

Single card though, 290, not 290x or 970

Corsair TX650w, but i have a spare Silverstone Strider 1KW 80 Plus Gold... it's major overkill for anything right now.

Check Amazon, and keep an eye for any deals on OCUK.

The Gainward 970 iirc isn't the greatest, look into MSI/Gigabyte/EVGA.

Having had a 970, then changing to 2 290xs I can say I've got great experiences of both. When I run games in 1080p using only one 290x, it feels identical to when I used the 970. By that I mean framerates are great, minimums are good, no stuttering and no driver issues. There obviously will be differences, but the naked eye didn't notice.

That would do nicely. I personally had the G1 Gaming, but the MSI one was my second choice. If the game interests you then it's a great card at a great price :)

I got the G1 Gaming, without the game, and STILL got the game ;)

I did this and it all went fine. http://event.gigabyte.com/201506_VGA_promotion

Scroll down to click 'Apply Game Code', choose location, accept agreement.

Add S/N/Checkcode/EAN Number & pic proof

G1 Boosts between 1392Mhz/1404Mhz on its own, and I have pushed it to 1565Mhz Stable :) (Voltage limited, no modded yet)

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Mine hit 1520 with no power adjustments. Was a tasty card.
