Does the brand matter when buying a reference GPU?

Go to solution Solved by rentaspoon,

MSI, Gig and EVGA no

2nd class manufacturers yes

Not really.. only in the quality of the customer support offered.. But usually you can get a better cooled one at very near the same price.

+1, reference is not really that good unless you are gunna go 3 way SLI with them! The blower coolers are alot better for this! Get a nice MSI or Gigabyte one! Might mean waiting a while but its worth it!

With the H440 airflow issues you understand why I want the reference :)

Nope, just pick the one with the best customer support. Your buying from EVGA anyway.

This, EVGA Hybrid or ACX is a good option. G1 would be even better and would look good in yin yang :P

I would say yes, Zotac have made strides in there reputation the past year tho.

It doesn't mean they make bad products, just I wouldn't have as much confidence in buying one so would spend more time researching the card.

Not sure if they have customer support where I live.

True, I am really getting impressed with Zotac. They are improving a lot while keeping their GPUs at a lower price than most other manufacturers.

Evga sells slightly oced versions of refrence models

PC is Intel Core i5 6400, GIgabyte H170 Gaming 3, Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x4GB 2400Mhz ,Sandisk Ultra Plus 128GB, WD Blue 1TB, NZXT S340, ASUS Geforce GTX 960. Fractal Design Tesla R2 650W. http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/793XNG. Graphics card choices don't always have to be dictated on performance. If you want the game stream and power consumption of the GTX 970 get that. If you want raw performance of the R9 390 get that. In the end we are all gamers, so what if your buddy gets an extra 5 fps?

Nope, bar the different clock speeds which any one with two or more hands could do themsevles :P Also customer support but you shouldn't buy reference unless you want cheap waterblocks or SLI/CF configs.

I want reference because:

  1. Easier to find waterblocks
  2. blower style cooler (which is good for my H440)
  3. planned SLI in future will benefit from it if I stick to non-watercooling

Fits the bill :P Also the waterblocks are hell of a lot cheaper on those cards than on custom PCB one, lifes good.

I just hope EKWB will do a separate "class" of waterblocks and backplates for the 980Ti :D I know that it has the exact same PCB as the TitanX but it would look odd to have a 980Ti with the backplate saying "TitanX" :D

@EK Luc - any info on this? :)

They usually do since Nvidia don't care if board partners mod the 980ti but for some reason don't like it when you mod Titan X's :P Or any titan for that matter xD

For the reference 980Ti we have decided to only have the Titan X blocks and backplates.

I know some don't like the idea of having a block that states the wrong card but it's not the first time.  Last time it was the Titan card owners who ended up with 780Ti blocks when we discontinued the original Titan block.

Sorry about that guys
