Xeon or i7

Hello,

 

I was just researching a build for doing photoshop and things, and i found this:

On paper it shows that the Xeon E3-1246 v3 is 100 Mhz slower, but the gpu is 100 Mhz faster and costs 25$ less? are there any other drawbacks to the xeon here?

 

to anybody that doesnt click the link, i am comparing the i7-4790 and not the K version so dont post "a xeon cant overclock" because this i7 cant either

If you are buying an i7 you should be buying i7 4790K.

If you are buying a Xeon you should be buying E3-1231 V3.

They both have their places. Both of those you picked are not good value atleast in my opinion.

Unless he doesn't plan on overclocking, then he can go with the 4790.

1. this computer is for my dad at work and he does not want to overclock (i have the i7-4790k myself and i love it though)

2. my dad has this great plan,

step 1: buy computer with iGPU

step 2: see if it is good enough

step 3: buy a gpu if it is needed

(kinda works but you are wasting the money you spent on a more expensive chip with an iGPU)

so we want iGPU

 

and this will not be gaming... strictly photoshop and lightroom

No. The 1230v3 was haswell xeon. 1231v3 is haswell refresh.

Right, so... Xeons are meant for servers, but you can use it in 'regular' PC's too.

And i7 CPU's are waaaay better than FX CPU's.
