i just discovered that you can overclock your CPU, i didnt know that i thought you can only overclock your GPU

so if i overclock my CPU will i boost more fps in gaming?

i own 2 gtx 980ti, asus hero motherboard and in i7-4790k 4.40 GHz

can i boost the 4.4Ghz to 4.9Ghz or 5.0Ghz or more? how high can it go?

why did you even get a K CPU if you didn't know about OCing? :P

anyway, the OC you can get heavily depends on you CPU cooler, the chip itself and your motherboard. so what cooler do you have?

Sometimes, yes. It can boost FPS. But it depends on how far you can push the CPU, it's all about the silicon lottery.

The majority who bought a 4790k has managed to overclock it to 4.8GHz at 1.325V.

The limit of your overclock is largely determined by the CPU you have. With that said, most games do not really benefit from overclocking, and the ones that do are CPU heavy. Games like Minecraft, Crysis 2/3, Battlefield 4, City Skylines, and Skyrim will benefit from overclocking. Tomb Raider 2013 is a great example of a CPU agnostic title - you gain maybe .4FPS when going with a more powerful CPU.

Depends on the game. You might see some improvements but they won't be huge and they won't be in every game.

Also, whether or not you can actually reach the clocks you want depends on the silicon lottery. If you're lucky you can, if you're not you probably can't.

im either getting the H100i GTX 240mm or the H100i GT 280mm or the master cooler 212 EVO air cooler

im not sure which one will let me overclock the most which do you recommend?

The Hyper 212 Evo is a budget cooler. The H100i is a high end AIO - the H100i will beat it.

Any games that really use your CPU will definitely benefit for sure.

As others have noted, it really depends on the specifics of the game, and/or other applications you are running.  If the CPU is not being maxxed out by whatever you are doing then an overclock probably won't give you anything.

However if you are experiencing performance drops during demanding moments in game, or when trying to run other multiple apps then yes an overclock should get you some added FPS.

Improvements mainly show up as (and are most noticeable as) an improvement in minimum frame rates.

Love how you can own 2 980ti's and NOT own that CPU's can be OC'ed. And also post on LTT without that knowledge. Lol

Most games won't benefit much FPS wise but can help frame times and overall smoothness.

In some instances you can see a boost in performance. As for how far it will go, it all depends on the chip. Some people have trouble adding on 200MHz, others can break the 5GHz barrier and keep going. My Pentium is a fairly average overclocker (daily at 4.6/1.3 seems to be perfectly stable).

It can boost your performance, depending on the game it will vary how much fps you get more. However you wont get less so go ahead
