Why the sapphire screen? But it actually doesn't seem too bad.

Ubuntu is part of a company. Canonical owns it and wants to make money off it

So much, $830 in a phone with all that is actually pretty inexpensive if you compare it to current retail pricing for what you get.  That's actually less than what one would expect.  (keep in mind that's 830USD retail, doesn't mean that's what it's going to sell for).

it's almost unscrachable, only diamond is harder so that's the only thing that can scratch the screen, that means, no scratches from sand

I went to put in for the 600USD one day thing, but it requires you pay with paypal :(  Paypal sucks, and I refuse to use it (had one bad experience after another with them).

Oh well, I guess we will see if it can get to 32 million or not.

sexy as

price isn't that bad £390 for 24 hours is cheap cheap cheap, but then the full price is 'only' £540 which is what the Galaxy S4 is (Carphone Warehouse it's £560) unlocked and that only has a pathetic 16GB of storage.

Does 4GB of RAM mean an x64 mobile CPU?

Maybe it is capable of running full ubuntu (the desktop version not the touch) I hope they have WiDi or something similar supported cause I don't want to carry around a hdmi cable to use this as a desktop. (albeit a very poor desktop)

Would most probably be on an ARM 64, being developed by AMD.

Looks pretty cool but that goal seems a bit too much.

Considering Korea claims there have been 20 million S4s sold worldwide, and these guys are only valuing their mass production mark at just under 40 thousand (that's one/five-hundredths of the S4 sales), I'd say their goal actually isn't too much.  (they are wanting a mass production fund because it's the most cost effective way to produce something).

$32 million dollars is a huge stretch, i'm not sure if ubuntu has the following to reach it...

I hope they can reach this goal, mostly they can possibly release a new version in the future which hopefully by then Intel and AMD will be efficient enough to fit a full fledged laptop CPU/APU in one of these bad boys.

It looks beautiful...

But at 720p, it is going to be dead in the water. No one is going to pay a premium unless they are a person that "must have" it.

Plus, I'm all for Ubuntu making its way to the phone world, but the market won't be too pleased with another OS. We already have three major ones, but having some phones come out and about that look great, but also don't have one of the mainstream OS's, will only confuse the average person.

I personally would love to get one, but I'm going to wait for a rooted Android version and the phone to be cheaper. $800 for a phone? Galaxy S4's only cost about $250 for Samsung to make.

When you say it like that the goal really doesn't seem like much of a stretch.

However the thing to consider is, Ubuntu doesn't have the following to get the word of this out within the time frame of their campaign, neither can they afford the advertising Samsung put into the device.

However if they can overcome the advertising barrier (through sites such as this forum) then their goal can easily be achieved.

I believe that it is up to the readers of this and similar posts to help get the word out, else the goal may never be reached. It is essential to remember that the word of knowledgeable techies and smart phones users counts for a lot more then that of the average computer illiterate apple fan-boy.

I have doubts that it will support widi (Wireleass Display), my guess will be either mini display port or micro HDMI. This along with USB and Peripheral ports will be a crucial concern as a keyboard and mouse is a must for business use. The only real solution i can see for this will be blue tooth mice/keyboards.

The big issue is that things like this take off fast, then loose momentum even faster.  Even at it's current pace, they are on track to only have 15 million signed up for in the next 30 days.  But what will most likely happen is that it will pick up, die off, pick up, die off, etc.

Hard to say, I'd love to see them succeed, I'm just pissed they require PayPal to spend anything over 500 bucks, because of that I will not be buying it.  Besides, if they come up with this and are successful, there will be someone the following day with something just as good for less money.

Yeah but I would say this one is more worthy for those $800 bucks, 4GB of RAM and 128 GB of Storage against 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. Much closer to the final selling price than the S4, I don´t see trying to make that much of a profit when compared to Samsung own efforts.

I just hope they really release Ubuntu OS as an opne platform, I am more than pleased to try it out.

32 million is just a really important milestone, I think they are just overextending to have a safety net
