Help choosing a boss GPU?

Hello community. I built my PC in August with an r9 270x 4GB from sapphire. It can run nearly  everything very well at 1080p on high and sometimes max settings. The reason i want a a new GPU is to run games like Witcher 3, Total War: Attila and games to come in the next couple years. I also want to be able to play at 4k down the road whenever i want to buy a monitor. So, would it be a better choice to buy a 980 or two 970's? I'm poor at decision making. I'm done with AMD by the way lol.

Single 980 all day every day. It will preform well and you won't have to deal with SLI.

single 980 most definitely. when you want to go 4K you can buy another and 2 or 3way SLI them. 

two 970's arn't really going to cut it for 4K i'm afraid!

If you're considering 970 sli and 4k, just get a 980 Ti.

970, 980Ti or 280x are all good options

Ummm no. 2 970's will destroy a single 980 at 4k. However, neither choice is suitable for 4k. Buy a 980 ti now, it's in between 2 970s and a 980 as far as price goes, and has the same performance as the 970s in sli or a titan x. Easily the best single card you can get right now for 4k that isn't way overpriced.

well if you're looking at sli 970's you'll be better off with a 980ti, performs about the same but with less power draw and no sli issues. also the price is very similar

If you aren't getting 4k at all, get the 970s. They rek 1080p. The 980 is like 12% better than the 970 alone, so it's a massive difference in performance when you have 2 970s vs 1 980. If you will get 4k, get the 980ti.

2 970's > 1 980. One 980 is overpriced, and you suggested he buy multiple overpriced cards. For 1080p. He could already do 4k with a 980ti, which would cost him $650 as opposed to 2 or 3 980s which would be closer to $1000-over $1500.

It all depends on what cash he has now and what his long term plans are.

If he decides to only jump to 4K in 20 years, it won't make that big of a difference if he choses to go 980Ti now.

 

My idea is: Get whatever fits your budget and powers your resolution now, and later you can sell it for a better (potentially stronger) card when updating your resolution.

 

Your point about P2P of 980 and 980Ti is still valid..

 

PS: I did not suggest multiple. I suggested a single 980 for now.

290x/980ti is what id go for. Or see what AMD has to offer with r9 300. The prices will go down aswell

Yes, yes I would. As should anyone with a 980 Ti because they're generally equivalents.

 

The way I see it 970 SLI for 4K is like a GTX 770 for 1080p. Is there better available for more money? Yeah, obviously. Is it capable in itself? Absolutely.
