What is the best free data recovery software?

I accidentally did something very stupid to one of my laptops.... I reset it to factory settings and formatted the hard drive. As it happens that laptop had important tax information that's needed... Right now. So I wanted to know which is the best and quickest data recovery software

formatted the hard drive? i dont think its recoverable anymore.

Recuva (piriform) is good and free, but I don't know how well it deals with formatted drives. As far as I know it should work though.

Thanks, it was only a quick format so all it would have done it set the drive space to empty. There haven't been any writes on it since so I don't think there will be too many problems associated with the drive being formatted
