Cheap Cannon Lens

I just got a Cannon 5D mark I from my uncle, but sadly I don't have a lens. I am on a really tight budget and don't have $300 to spend on a good lens. I was really looking at a 100mm macro lens, but all the ones that I could find were over my budget. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Which one would be the best for macro photos?

Depends how macro you need... none of these are dedicated macro lenses, they will all be $300 or above

If you can only afford a small amount the 50 f1.8 is only $125, and has a nice DOF, minimum focusing distance is around 35cm though

Okay, thanks for the help. I have no idea how macro I need. I was going to do some portraits and maybe some macro nature shots.

the 50mm will do decent portraits and is a nice street lens too, especially now you can get in close

It should do ok with shots of like flowers and stuff, dont expect to take a crazy photo of a tiny ant or anything but should do okay

its not the best lens in the world but its cheap and sharp

Canon EF 50mm f1.8 STM + Canon EF-12

One way to go is to get an adapter and buy vintage lenses, I have done this on several of my DSLRs and the photos always come out great. Look for Canon FD lenses, they're usually dirt cheap and there's plenty of them on eBay.

And FD lenses don't focus to infinity without a light eating adapter with optics in it. 50mm 1.8 STM will be a decent allrounder on a budget.

macro lens

I made a comparison for you.

Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM reproduction ratio x0.21

post-160594-0-09966300-1433797784_thumb.

Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM + EF 12 II reproduction ratio x0.45

post-160594-0-02923300-1433797881_thumb.

Canon EF 100mm 2.8 Macro USM +EF 12 II  reproduction ratio x1.19

post-160594-0-93917300-1433798012_thumb.

The pictures aren't cropped I just re-scaled them.

Your full frame sensor wouldn't make a big difference because the reproduction ratio is independent from the sensor size.

BTW: The Canon EF 50mm 1.8 II is having a smaller reproduction ratio of x0.15

I have an old Cannon Camera, but i have no idea what size the lens is, because it shoots in film.

All Canon EF lenses work on all Canon EOS cameras.

This is an FD Lens which is designed for a camera with a smaler flange focal distance. An expensive adapter in needed.

How expensive are we talking?

AFAIK the only good converter is the original Canon and it is rare and really expensive.

Buying the 50mm 1.8 STM is definitely a much better deal.

Its not too bad, main downside is you lose half to a full stop of light. overall image is slightly softer than it would be otherwise, but still for $30 if you already have existing FD lenses to use its a good idea - the metabones one is 100% awesome, but like $150 or something

Thats why I am glad i moved to mirror-less can just use cheapo adapters on legacy glass :D

Example i found online
