It depends on your use. The camera would cost 800 new with that lens. The lens is okay. You could get something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Digital-Double-Zoom-18-55mm-55-200mm/dp/B00CCGZ6PO/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1374437522&sr=1-2&keywords=nikon+d3100

Personally I like nikon a lot more. I have a nikon d5100 with 55-300 and a 35mm f 1.8 lens.

I would definitely go for it. As long as its in decent condition, you should do it. I got a t3i for $500 on Amazon for black friday, and have loved it. If you want to see an example of the picture quality, look at my flickr link in my signature.

Is that camera better? I have no experience with photography, but I want to get into it. Which one should I get? I want to mainly do 1080p videos like Linus, and take some sharp photos. Thanks.

The nikon does 1080 full hd at 30fps. The newer version has a external mic input. The two lens that come with it are also good for filming. I have a d5100 (next level up and it has external mic input and swivel display.)

I would say if you want the balance of photography and video then the T3i is probably the way to go.

As for the lens, it's very similar to the 18-55, new users will find it good, however the reality is that it is not. It will be decently sharp in the center of the image but gets a bit soft towards the corners, with heaps of distortion at the wider focal lengths. All in all though it is a good walk about lens to get started with, but you will see the flaws and want to move on as time goes by.

The cheapest way to get nice sharp images and good optics is to go with prime lenses (non zooms), the most popular is the 50mm f/1.8, however I would advise you to skip this and grab the f/1.4 instead, it is built so much better and has a USM motor which is so much more reassuring to use. There are also 24's and 35's etc to consider but they are slightly more expensive and as most of the prime lenses are designed with still images in mind they probably wont have IS which isn't going to be any good for handheld video.

I have the t3i, its a fantastic camera, and especially at that price.

Canon has a fantastic track record, and for the low end price range, the t3i is the most recommended camera (based on multiple forums, and in person accounts).

I'd say go for it. You'll want to look into more lens with the money you're saving :D

The t3i and d5100 are basicly the same camera. The one that he is looking at is used so there is some question as to the quality of the camera. I personally like the nikon menu system much more than the cannon one. So clearly we are both fanboys! You have a t3i and I have a d5100.

I would say canon is better for video but if you dont think youll even need or use that pick Nikon. The one thing about canon you cant do on nikon is use full frame lenses on a crop frame camera. At least I dont think nikon supports this I may be wrong.

I have the T3i and magic lantern is fine on it. THe T3i already has manual audio levels so it isn't much of a problem.

Yea audio will work about the same as before they couldnt do all the stuff they did on the T2i though as the company would give them info on the chip.
