Okay so I am thinking of switching my current GPU setup, of a R9 280x crossfired with a 7970, over to Nvidia.

I either want to get a dual GTX 970, Dual GTX 980 or maybe a single card depending on cost and performance.

I would like to know what kind of system performance I would get if I do decide to make this change. Will I get more or less performance from my system? And I would also like to know what I should get in the way of Nvidia. Should I get on GTX 970, two of them? One GTX 980, or two of them? ETC.

What kind of performance difference do you think I would get with going to just one 980Ti?

If you can afford sli 970 I would go with 980 ti as it is nearly the exact same as 970 sli performance wise and close in price. It would also not present sli scaling issues and would have more constant performance.

How much better or worse would switching over to the 980Ti from my current system be? Performance wise.

yes, in some games the sli scaling is horrible, in bf4 i get around 50-60% GPU usage

280X and 7970 in CrossFire is effectively 2 970's. Getting one 980 would be a downgrade in performance, whereas getting two 980's would be a gain. However, if you decide 980, go 980Ti instead of the regular 980. The 980Ti is more fps per dollar, and with 2 of them, that's essentially 2 Titan X cards with half the memory. Also, a 980Ti will boost higher than a Titan X.

I think your current set up is a little under sli 970s so a 980 ti would not be a huge gain. If you are playing on 1080p I think you should just wait as I am willing to bet you can run almost every game you play at ultra on 1080p.

980ti is pretty much with 5-12% of a 295x2 to give you a referance, 7970 to 290x is ~30% then 21% for the second card (crappy rough math) maybe like ~52% better performance with a 980ti.

Edit: lol, depends on the game more like 43% performance over 7970 sli.

Well a single 970 will probably degrade your performance. A single 980 or 980ti will probably not make a huge difference. Dual 970 will definitely improve your performance.

But make sure your mobo is sli certified. Nvidia charges extra for that.

EDIT: in general I wouldn't recommend to switch at the moment. The grass isn't always greener on the nvidia site [emoji28]

WHAT? the 295x2 is significantly faster than the Titan x which is significantly faster than a 980ti

It all depends on what resolution you're gaming at. The 980 ti makes zero sense for 1080p, it is a 1440p and above card, the same will almost certainly be the case for AMDs upcoming flagship(which is supposed to be called the Radeon Fury).

The problem with the 980 is that its overkill for 1080p, but not quite up to snuff for all out 1440p gaming on ultra settings. If it drops in price substantially now that the 980 ti is out and AMDs 300 series is right behind it, then it might make sense as a future proofed 1080p card that can handle any game on ultra settings for the foreseeable future at that resolution.

The 970 on the other hand is just right for 1080p, although the 3.5 gb vram thing still leaves a bad taste in my mouth about that card. Its also not really future proof as it can barely handle some of the newest titles on ultra settings at 1080p. If the 970 drops in price it might be a little more worth it, but I would wait a bit to see how AMDs 300 series pans out and affects prices.

Go for the 980 Ti. I'm currently (impatiently) waiting on EVGA cards to become available. 980 Ti is a beast of a card and if you ever need more HP, SLI down the road (which is what I will do when going to 4K).

Depends on the game really, I'm taking averages. 980ti is not much slower then a titan X in most games, all depends on the resolution, higher resolutions the gap is generally less.

The reasons why I am wanting to change out my cards is one, the drivers a bit more stable, two, I want cooler temps on my GPU so I can actually utilize it in it's entirety, and three, I want my next SLI settup to be much more powerful than the one I have now so if I do get two 980Ti's then it'll be really powerful...

The 980ti is right in the middle between the 980 and Titan x. Perhaps in the future with some better drivers the story will be different but I doubt it.

I'd either get one GTX 970 or one GTX 980 Ti. The 980 is ridiculously overpriced in comparison to the 970 and 980 Ti, and the 980 Ti comes close to SLI 970 performance in a single card.

My 295x2 comparsion is relatively out of place by about 5% on average but the 980ti is not much slower then a titan X.

980 ti's  it is then. Cooler temps are nice and the overclocking room on the 980 ti seems to be pretty good with Jay saying he got them up to 1400 +
