i5 4690K is probably best bang for buck.

If you need a lower price, go for i3 4160.

If you still need a lower price, go for the AMD Athlon X4 860K (but yeah, that's AMD)

EDIT:

The i5 4460 falls inbetween the i5 4690K and i3 4160

Yep ^^

But there's not much bang for buck in an i7 for gaming though.

I need a CPU for my gaming rig I'm planning.

I would like to know what CPU is the best for gaming, and which CPU is the best bang for ur buck when it comes to gaming.

I'm thinking Intel processor, but I'm open to ideas.

Any feedback is most appreciated

What graphics card will you be getting?

If you're getting a low end one, there's little sense in getting an i5-4690K (which, btw, is an excellent chip).

You're probably better off getting something like an i3 or low end i5 if you're pairing it with something like a GTX 750 Ti or R7 260X.

the ONLY i7 you should buy is 4790K nothing else from i7 series makes sense.

Well the i5 4690k and i7 4790k both have 4 cores, but the i7 4790k has 8 threads and the cache is 8MB. The i5 4690k only has 4 threads and a 6MB cache.

It depends on the game. In general it's probably best to get the Haswell-E octocore and overclock it as high as you can. Heavily CPU bottlenecked games are typically only CPU bottlenecked because the game cannot use many cores, so either of the two DC chips overclocked to max will be better, because a 4 core DC is on average going to overclock better.

Of course the CPU drives the platform of choice. If you're going z97, you're not doing four way SLI, but my question is why one needs four way SLI in the first place.

4790K or 5820K IIRC if you need the  extra cores.

But i7's don't make much sense in bang for buck gaming builds (they may add like 2 fps or even 0fps)

Heyyo,

i5 4690K works just fine. The i7-4790k offers maybe a 10% increase in performance... so the i7-4690k is only useful if you're into video editing and such most games don't perform any different over the quad core.

some may like sli / cf in mobo.. to future proof it

it's a bad way to go. never worth crossfire/sli later since new single gpu is more powerful and more efficient. not to mention we are talking about bang for your buck here. sli is not good value, never is, never was.

Basically any socket 1150 quad cores is the best gaming cpu. If you got 2 of the same systems, one has a Core i5 4440 and the other is Core i5 4690K, just buy playing the same exact game on both computers, will you be able to tell which one has the faster cpu? Or one has a Core i5 4690k and the other Core i7 4790K, will you know the difference, and say the cpu that system is running on without looking at the specs.

Jayztwocents said he went from an OC'd 9590 to an i7 and it was the worst mistake ever. spents hudreds of dollars for 1 fps. In Gaming the Gpu is the engine and the cpu is the carberator that feeds the engine IMHO. When you compare MB/cpu combos the difference between amd and intel is even more pronounced. If its your parents money go with an i5 or i7. If you have a job and a brain and it's your money get the biggest baddest gpu you can afford and either a 6 core or 8 core amd cpu/MB combo with whats left. Without money for a gpu an A10-7850k will smoke any i7 out there. That is a fact.
