G3258 > 8320?

Go to solution Solved by Godlygamer23,

It's not worth it. Don't do it.

Hi. So currently I've got an FX 8320, and it's an amazing CPU, but I've been thinking of upgrading to Intel, with a slight bank account struggle. I'm thinking of selling my current 8320 & 970A-DS3P setup for a Pentium G3258 & MSI Krait Z97 setup. How would gaming performance stack up? Would I see any FPS boost? I'm not trying to lose performance just for the Intel upgrade path. Help me team, this is a very tempting idea.

8320 > Pentium.

Go for an i5 4690 or 4690K if you want to gain performance by quite a bit.

Specs: CPU - Intel i7 8700K @ 5GHz | GPU - Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming | Motherboard - ASUS Strix Z370-G WIFI AC | RAM - XPG Gammix DDR4-3000MHz 32GB (2x16GB) | Main Drive - Samsung 850 Evo 500GB M.2 | Other Drives - 7TB/3 Drives | CPU Cooler - Corsair H100i Pro | Case - Fractal Design Define C Mini TG | Power Supply - EVGA G3 850W

Nope, save up for at the very least a i5 4460 otherwise you are getting either a downgrade or a unnoticeable slight upgrade.

Don't do that. The 8320 is objectively better in all but single and dual threaded activities. Gaming typically uses four cores, giving the FX the edge here. I'd consider swapping to an i3 to be a sidegrade and anything less than an i5 a waste of time and money.

So I would be losing gaming performance? I'm more interested in the upgrade path, so I will be getting a 4690k in September if I actually did this. If I did end up losing gaming performance, any idea how much?

Depends on the game. If you plan to play Far Cry 4, you won't even be able to play the game without modding.

Provided you can re-use the memory, you're looking at about a $200 expense. But you lose the cores that your system could take advantage of for running other processes -- my wife runs her system hard on her 8350, tons of processes running simultaneously, and her system has no problems keeping up. In gaming you might notice some gains or you might not -- that'll depend on your current graphics setup (monitors included) and the games in question.

$200 will buy you an i5-4690K. A hundred or so on top of that will get a mainboard. Save up for that instead so you're at least keeping a decent core count. Or save up $300 plus the mainboard to get an i7.

My build: Mira - Ryzen 7 3700X, 32GB EVGA DDR4-3200, ASUS Prime X470-PRO, EVGA RTX 3070 XC3, beQuiet Dark Base 900, EVGA 1000 G6

Thanks, I guess I'll just deal with single-core performance for a few more months until I can actually get an i5.

Going to the pentium, youd lose performance, but comparing the 8320 to the i5 4690k, youd be gaining performance.

definitely for the best. why pay 80-90 bucks more for an upgrade than you need to. i wouldn't recommend FX cpus for gaming but i would definitely recommend keeping an fx6 or fx8 if the option is a pentium.

I would wait, the G3258 is crippled in thread heavy games. It's not worth going out and spending $70 on a G3258 that you could of invested towards a i5-4440 instead. I would hold off on buying the motherboard as well due to a possibility of them getting cheaper (or someone tossing out a new design) in the coming months.

And there are some games that won't even run on the G3258 since it's only a dual-core.

Don't so it. 8320 is way better. Unless you getting i5. Anything lower than i5 is not better than 8320 it is just a waste of your money.

Better save up and get at least i5 4440. And i5 4440 will require a cheap mobo as you don't need overclocking ability so basically don't not stress your budget way too much.

CPU:  i7 4770k @ overclocked to 4.4ghz             GPU: Intel HD4600                                                                SSD: Kingston V300 120GB (OS)                   Cooler:  Corsair H100i GTX

G3258 is a downgrade, even from my Phenom II X6.

Just wait until you can afford at least an i5.
