Hey all, got a question for you.

Generic 8 Port Ethernet Switch Vs Branded 8 Port Ethernet Switch

Is there really a difference in performance (mostly for gaming on a LAN) between them as they do the same thing as I have bought some generic stuff (usb 3.0 hdd enclosures and stuff) and it works perfectly.

Thanks in advance.

The branded ones are probably just that, branded. you could get a generic one, slap a TP-Link sticker on it and it would become a TP-Link one

They should perform the same, the unbranded ones are a gamble in terms of quality and often have lacking support/warranty

-snip-

As long as it is a gigabit switch, it's just good.

It's just a bit of copper and stuff inside of a housing.. (some with and some without branding on it)

Just look up some TP-Link and D-Link switches, those look pretty much the same don't they?? Almost as if they were the same.. Apart from the Logo ..

Anyways, I would still recommend something with at least a trustworthy brand (like D-Link), because you don't want it to blow up..

My brother uses this one (through which I am connected too) and it works good:

EDIT: Netgear uses pretty much the same housings too.

if it works like it stated, then no.

however it's better to know what brand the product you are using, because something might screw up

suddenly stop working

a port died

adapter got fried

etc

with unknown brand you will encounter much problem to RMA/claim warranty for the product.

Usually there is a reason beyond just the brand-name why a product is more expensive than another . I have had so many cheaper internet routers and switches that have gone bad after only a couple of months of usage that I have grown very fond of the more expensive products that just simply work right. Furthermore, going for something cheaper and then being forced to upgrade because it doesn't do the job right usually results in more money spent than just buying something better in the first place.

For something like a switch the difference in quality is not so much the branding but the features and the durability.  The reason you pay more for HP, Dell or cisco is because they are tested to survive years of constantly on at full or near full use.  For domestic use, just about anything will do and the only difference between units will be features, the cheaper they are the less features they'll have.

I have an 8 port 10/100 switch here I have been using nonstop since 2003 (maybe a bit earlier). It is generic (starnet brand) and was very cheap.
