SilverStone Headphone Stand Design Contest

They 3D printed my design pretty well

https://myminifactory.com/object/expandable-headphone-s-mount-9198

I actually like how it came out, the only gripe is that the images I uploaded got cropped, including assembly instructions. they also didn't include the link to the assembly video I did.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GNb-arumdo

The design side mounts headphones, the main bar is made of 100mm segments so you can pick up as many segments as you want and make the bar as long as you want depending on your headphone collection, after seeing Linus table of headphones, I wanted a solution that could be built upon further in the future as a collection expanded, its ideal for having an entire wall will lined with rows for holding headphones.

I just wrote and made images of how to put it together, it was a fairly concise set of instructions that explain a lot more. it would be nice if we were aloud to write a description or a short feature list, would love to be able to make fancy 3D animations like that. One of the main things i had in mind with my design was an LED that would light up the headphones when mounted and look like a cool accent light when collapsed, i tried to add this photo but it was rejected unfortunately.

p.s. I like your modular design  :)

Thanks, I like your design too, I didnt think about RGB's, now that would be a pretty awesome feature, I kept my design simple but being honest I spent way too much time trying to find the shape for the bar segments, I didnt want simple round bar, drew dozens of shapes on a white board before I settled on that one, even made a cardboard model to see if the scale was just right  :P   overall I'm happy with it. I love contests like this that give you that chance to create something.

integration of an LED would be a little complicated but I just wanted to see if I could make it stand out in any way. Scale is hard to get right when the design is just in your head, I got a ruler and put it against the wall just to see, originally there was no bottom plate in mine and the whole thing lifted with the hinge, downside now is it only really has room for one pair of headphones.

Don't worry, Silverstone and I will be looking through all of them :)

We will have the final say.

Linus

I hope you guys will be taking any renders or additional pictures uploaded by the designers into account... some of the official setups were... in error....

Scaling is always annoying during design, especially on a computer screen, maybe microsoft hololense will live upto the hype  ;)  I had a virtual wall drawn in solidworks, used keyshot to render it with various headphones to see what it was like, looked ok but out of paranoia made a cardboard model just to make sure  :P  I'm working on designs for my portfolio so I kept track of how I went about this project,  used hackaday.io to log everything  https://hackaday.io/project/6174-wall-mounted-headphone-stand

we can dream of the Iron man modeling in hololense, cant wait  :D id love to put more into 3d modeling just for fun. really want to learn how to make such nice renders, mine are in sketchup and they're only okay, i was hoping to render the light cast from the LED but i couldn't get the sketchup plugin i found to play nicely.

really cool to see your workflow too  :)

i have the same laptop and also use solidworks+keyshot lel

but most of the time, the first idea and drawings are just vague shapes, and then they get "proportionated" in solidworks

I usually draw stuff out alot, just this time for this I spent a while thinking alot about it and settled on that design. Cool to find someone else with the same laptop  :P I'm loving it so far  :P

I trust that you will do all you can to make this fair, thanks.

The only thing i worry about is where rendered uploads were missed etc. Going on a bad 3D print alone gives it no chance. oh well, nothing is perfect.

What laptop is that? Looks very similar to mine with a different keyboard :P . Mine is a SAGER NP 8150S-1, going back to sandybridge/nvidia 4xx series

yes, it's a clevo P150XM (there is 3 different letter in place of the "X" for the different gens, mine is a P150SM)

in think the first is EM then HM 2nd gen

and i think your's is the HM

EM has a shiny screen and screen border

HM has a mat screen and shiny border (with chiclet keyboard)

SM has a mat screen and scree border

still does the job but has been replaced by my desktop as primary. it has some battle scars such as missing rubber feet and the plastic around one of my hinges cracked and broke off, cant get a replacement without buying a whole new display  -_-

I chose mine because it was simply the best value out of everything I could find, everything prebuilt seamed to allocate money where I didn't need it. such as 16gb of ram or an SSD back when they were super expensive.

Anyway we've gone off topic  :P I'm looking into getting my model printed, I have no idea what way the competition is going to go but want to see my design in the flesh regardless. I'd love if we could see where our designs stand in the voting currently.

The laptop I have is a clevo but branded pc specialist, got it from dabs.ie but they've since run out of stock of this model, can remember the exact model, but there was plenty of versions with different specs, the one I have now has the following.

Processor Intel® Core i7-4710MQ CPU @ 2.50GHz, 2501 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

Intel® HD Graphics 4600  with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M running a 1920 x 1080 screen

currently only has 8gb ram but intend to upgrade to 16 eventually.....maybe

As for storage I have a 120gb ssd and a 1tb hdd, lost dvd drive but the old laptop serves to rip disks to iso's when i need them.

Added illuminated keyboard is nice, wish i could set a colour for each individual key but it does the job and still has some nice options.

Not sure if anyone else has noticed but the pages have been shuffelled. Not sure but they maybe be ordered by downloads/views? I have gone from page 21 to 1 :D

Or it could just be random luck

yeah its a clevo body with custom parts added by the vendor, are they still user upgradable with GPU and CPU?

that was back when all the models that wern't added got put in. there was 23 pages of models day one, there were 15 added and all got shuffled around. i just went from page 6 to page 7. the only way it could be completely fair is if it was shuffled every hour or so, originally some of the designs were featured on the front page too which is a bit unfair, they don't seam to be anymore though.

I'm honestly not sure if the gpu and cpu are user upgradable, I think the only options I really have is to add a third drive and upgrade ram,

As for the shuffling of the site, my entry used to be on page 37 of max 38,  now its gone to page 4, I don't think its ordered by views because models with a lower view count appeared before mine and mines has a low download count so I don't see how it would make it to page 4 with that. Alot of people outside the site are being put off voting because they have to make an account in order to download and cast a vote, shame they didnt do a conventional voting button.

this laptop chassis and motherboard have a CPU socket and MXM plug

so you can change

CPU

GPU

2 mSata drives

mPCIE (for wifi mostly)

ODD

and the keyboard

And the other quite crippling flaw to the voting system is that I imagine a lot of people who have entered might not want to vote for other people, as they want to win themselves! Thankfully the competition isn't going to progress based on votes.

Do you pay for a Keyshot license (not trying to call you out as a pirate or anything), just wondering since Keyshot 5 is mad expensive and I only have access to it since my University pays for a subscription of both SolidWorks and Keyshot on the school computers. I have a keyshot trial version, but it has the ridiculous watermark and bottlenecked render settings.

I forgot about that part, they just got give or take a few hundred new users to their platform, not many who will cast a vote, atleast if they implemented a proper voting system where it had to have accounts like now, they could lock down people voting for themselves properly  :P  im glad its not going to be overly weighed based on votes, theres some pretty good designs near the last pages that arent getting it too easy,

yeah, a bit like adobe softwares, unless you need them for professional uses nobody pay for those ^^

i'm waiting for update 6, it should make the animations really useable, for now it's a real pain

I went and liked and commented on every printed design i liked and then came here and found the ones that were better rendered and went and liked those. I don't think it should be determent by downloads anyway as not everyone has a reason to download because not everyone has a printer.

I generally like the designs that are more than just a stick on the wall, models that have things like folding, modular bits, cable management etc. just the ones that have imagination in them.

I'm also not keen on designs that will more take control of a theme in the man cave like the silverstone snow flake one but it is still a nice design and it stands out from the crowd.
