Folding with 6 GPUs in One Rig

Go to solution Solved by Whaler_99,

For a case with multi gpu's, check out http://spotswoodcomputercases.com/wp/- these are awesome. I used his cases for my 4P units. He has them for multi GPU setups designed for use with extensions.

DO NOT rewire the plug. In North America all modern electrical wiring is designed to handle 15A. If you change the plug to say a 20A one and swapped in a larger fuse, you could actually burn down the house by over heating the wiring. And changing out wiring and such would require permits. A lot of money. You can install and run extra 15A fuses and wiring. I did this in my crawl space.

For Folding - you only need a x1 slot. Period. Having a x4, x8 or x16 will in no way impact Folding. This has been tested a lot. So get a board with a couple of x16 and some x1 slots, then get some x1 to x16 expanders and away you go.

Yeah, it would be a dual 1600W setup... but man, the numbers would be amazing!

Oh, okay. I thought you were going to try and do that from one unit, and I was wondering how in the world...But dual power supplies should handle those just fine.

I want to get a total of 4... but that would just be insane..but fun, all at the same time! I wonder if i could get 4 of them in an mATX case... I can find motherboards that support them, but i wouldnt have enough slots to mount them to the case

yeah, it would be a TON cheaper to just run dual PSUs

unless you're a electrician i really wouldn't. Electricity travels at the speed of light, can kill, hurts the whole time you're dying.

Electricity does not travel at the speed of light. Nothing can travel at the speed of light, except for light.

i know, the energy does, which isn't a very well defined term. electrons themselves travel something like syrup, or at least that what i always told people. in case im worried about has fast the heat transfers through a resistor (me) in a given time.

That's what I've told people as well. Long as it's correct, I'm good.

You could ghetto rig them outside the case with a PCI extension ribbon cable things, and probably run 4 of them. the heat output would be tremendous and that would really run up your power bill. Also they would probably run at 4x or 1x

yeah, if i were to build a rig with 4 of these massive cards, I would have to do it in a full ATX or even EATX or XLATX, I wont be putting more then 2 R9 295X2 cards in a single mATX machine. and that is the goal right now, 2 of them in my CaseLabs Mercury S5 case. It has plenty of ventilation and i can get mounts for the radiators. The build as its looking now can be found here: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mmvT7Pim rather proud of it myself :D

Heres a question tho... if each card is running at x8 speed in that mATX board like I want.. is that enough speed for both GPU cores on each card? is x8 enough for these cards?

8X will be like 2 or 3 frame's difference in games, which with 4 295x2's you could run 4k surround... 8X should be enough for a dual GPU card if 4X will run a 980 just fine.

yeah, but what about with folding? does the speed impact folding at all?

Folding is the same, there will be a difference but there's no way you will notice it.

Perfect, thanks. Hopefully the cards will be okay with just x8 per card. I dont see why they wont be tho

you could roast marshmallows on that thing lol. But yeah it should work, just have use two plugs, like I know the ones ( if you've got a electric stove) and where the washer and dyer support heavy wattages,

yeah hopefully the heat will still be good enough on the cards to avoid throttling. as long as the heat is being put into the room and staying away from the cards, ill be okay dealing with the heat

The idea to linus whole room water cooler, I know a few AIOs support getting longer tubing. Imagine mounting a radiator outside your house to take all the heat out with water coolers for the GPU

Then all you would have to worry about is supplying power and you could do like, 10 cards... just gotta pay for everything :P I would love to do it

This is great for the folding team and all and is amazing but may I ask why and why. It may be cool but what why

The only reason why, is because its a TON of fun and its for a good cause. There is no reason for me to spend the money on this realisticly. But the real truth is I love building computers. I love doing things to the extreme and I love going above and beyond. So for somthing like 6 or even 8 GPUs in one rig for folding, I do it for the fun. I also do it because it makes ALOT of content for my YouTube channel. I havent gotten anything posted piublicly yet, but as soon as I start my Main gaming rig as well as this rig, there will be a TON of build log videos. I do this because its my hobby, i enjoy doing crazy builds, and I enjoy going above and beyond, because its fun :)

Nice! I want a nice gpu for folding as well. I am folding on both of my pcs. Its fun and I am slowly moving up the ranks. Gotta say its fun.
