Hey Guys!

My 290x died due to static or something I guess, how ever I'll need a new GPU as 99x is kinda dependant on it =P

So the 290x and the 970 are both 350$ where I live. Playing on a 1440p monitor and looking forwards to GTA V and WItcher III and the new Deus Ex and so on, so not just Dota ;)

Any input?

Thx :)

-snip-

For 1440p I would have suggested a 290X over a 970, because it usually seems to get more FPS at that res.

But, GTA V seems to prefer Nvidia a lot ...

I am not sure in your case.. And both are at the same price.. Usually a 290X is cheaper than the 970, so that is why people sometimes recommend 290X over 970 :o

The 290x out performs, but from your game titles you're listing they're all Nvidia leaning, so you might get better FPS from an Nvidia card.

Ya I was leaning towards another 290x aswell.

@Minibois

Oh and usually the 290x is more expensive here at 400-450$ and the 970 is usually around 350, but found an XFX DD 290x for 350, so not sure on which to click buy.

I would get the 290X.

But I dont remember if the XFX DD is a good cooler though..

i don't think it is, i would get a 970 in this case.

Yeah, looked up the pics.. Doesn't seem that good.

With the prices of 290X cards where OP lives and the 970..

XFX DD is not a good cooler...What about a Gigabyte windforce? In AUS they are only $400.

I'm in Switzerland ;P Well I guess Shadows of Mordor and GTA V will crack the 3.5GB limit of the 970, which is basically what bothers me.

And yes the DD coolers used to be poopy, but from the reviews I read the new one Ghost 2.0 on the 290x is nice.

GTA V prefers Nvidia driver cause of less CPU overhead. It's not because the game is more optimized for Nvidia.

I think this is an older benchmark, which still had all advanced settings turned on.

You see the GTX 960 is performing quite a bit better than the R9 285..

But I believe it is not like this anymore, with the new drivers.

It's still like this. My 970 performs way better than the 290X, but it's because the 290X is bottlenecked by the CPU due to AMD's driver. People tend to blame game devs for optimizing games more for Nvidia. I'm just saying that's not the case.

Well with "But, GTA V seems to prefer Nvidia a lot ..." I didn't mean Rockstar programmed it for Nvidia or whatever, but just that it performs better on the Nvidia platform than AMD.

It sounded like you did. All CPU heavy games perform better with Nvidia, it's not just GTA V.

They perform about the same most of the time

But you basically have to buy Nvidia, they pay most game developers for exclusive optimizations. "Nvidia, what you have to buy the way it's meant to be played!"
