whats your resolution? I just picked up my first 970 the other day (Planning on 2 for 1440p g sync play) and its rock solid at 1080p, I have everything as high as it goes with 2x txaa and high res shadows turned on in the advanced section. Holds 60fps unless i do something like cause a 50 car pile up (That was awesome!)

Depends what resolution, the GTX970 is better at 1080p than the R9 290x and GTA also favors Nvidia

Anything with at least 2GB of VRAM, 4GB for a good experience.
Rockstar made GTA V with GTX 980's, take that into consideration aswell.

Funny how you call it 'good old' 970 when it's the newest of the bunch.

The 290x would perform best at higher resolutions and the 970 at lower ones.

Which card is most worth getting would depend on pricing.

At 1080p, the 970 will be best for GTA V, since the game seems better optimized for Nvidia. However overall the 290X 4GB is the best for your money.

Even at 4K the 970 beats the 290X. GTA V is just optimized better for Nvidia.

A 970 may just do the job.

My NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti handles GTA V great at 1080p for a low end card with only 2GB of ram... I have not tested this with an equivalent AMD card, however I do know that the game was created around Nvidia... What is your budget and what kind of an FPS range are you looking for? The 970 would definitly handle the game great anyway...

1080p sry :D

Yeah in that case the 970 would be your best bet as the others below me have agreed. It handles it beautifully

I would go with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 and if you can afford to, get a GTX 980...

? The 290x seems to perform better than the 970 as the resolution scales up:

I also remember reading that the difference is more clear with oc'ing.

As an owner of AMD and a friend of many AMD owners, the drivers aren't good for GTA V. We all usually get one or two crashes a day. Likely to be fixed, but it is optimized for and validated on nVidia cards.
